Mojiko Retro: A Historic Port District Exuding Meiji and Taisho Romanticism

Mojiko, in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, was an international trading port that reached the height of its prosperity during the Meiji and Taisho eras through trade with China and Korea. Once called the gateway to the Orient, it still preserves many Western-style buildings that convey that prosperity along one corner of the port town. Its symmetrical, elegant exterior is a symbol of Mojiko. The former Osaka Shosen, built in 1917, is a graceful building notable for its orange walls and tower. The former Moji Mitsui Club, built in 1921, is known as the place where the physicist Einstein stayed during his 1922 visit to Japan; its second floor houses the Einstein Memorial Room, recreating the room as it was. Atop the high-rise Retro Highmart (designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa) by the port, an observation room on the 31st floor offers sweeping views of the Kanmon Strait and Shimonoseki on the far shore.

The best seasons are spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November), when brick Western buildings interweave beautifully with cherry blossoms or autumn foliage in soft light. In summer, the post-sunset illuminations and evening walks are refreshingly cool, and the building lights reflected on the water show a face different from daytime. Arriving at dusk and staying past sunset lets you enjoy both the daytime and nighttime Mojiko.

The nearest station is Mojiko Station, the terminus of the JR Kagoshima Main Line, and the retro district opens up the moment you exit the ticket gate. From Hakata Station, it is roughly around an hour and a half via Kokura Station on JR; from Kokura Station it is a few tens of minutes on the JR Kagoshima Main Line. The Mojiko Retro observation room costs 300 yen for adults, open roughly 10:00 to 22:00 (last entry a little before closing). To reach Shimonoseki on the far shore of the strait, you can use the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, walking across beneath the seabed. Passage is free for pedestrians (bicycles and scooters pay 20 yen), open roughly 6:00 to 22:00, with a one-way walk of about 15 minutes. Paid parking lots dot the station area but get crowded on weekends.

The recommended seasons are spring and autumn. For photos, the Western buildings are quieter and more relaxing just after opening in the morning. For night views, aim for the observation room or the illumination hours. Major spots are concentrated within walking distance; allow 3 to 4 hours for a general tour, or half a day to a full day to include the evening scenery. There are many cobblestones and slopes, so wear comfortable shoes. It can be windy by the sea, so a layer is reassuring in spring and autumn. Walk the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel from Mojiko to easily extend your trip to Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. A strait-hopping journey enjoying both Kyushu and Honshu at once is also recommended.
