Southern Aizu Secret Tadami River Local Line: Steam Locomotive Scenery in River Mist

The JR Tadami Line, linking Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima with Koide in Niigata, runs 135.2 kilometers and is praised by railway fans nationwide as one of Japan's most beautiful local lines. From its windows, following deep mountains and the clear Tadami River, seasonal scenery unfolds one view after another. The sight of a train crossing an iron bridge over the river is famous across the country as a photography subject, making this a popular route for soaking in remote wilderness.

Highlights

In July 2011, the Niigata-Fukushima heavy rains washed away bridges and left the Aizu-Kawaguchi to Tadami section closed for years. Restored through the determination of local people, the full line reopened in October 2022 after an eleven-year interruption. The unhurried journey through deep gorges, virgin forest, and peaceful mountain villages lets you forget the bustle of the city. Along the route are beautiful bridges including the First Tadami River Bridge, 174 meters long, and the reflection of a train on the water is as lovely as a painting, drawing many photographers.

Season by Season

The lines great appeal is scenery that changes with the seasons. Spring brings the contrast of fresh green and lingering snow, summer the deep green and clear streams, autumn the vivid foliage coloring the mountains, and winter a world of silver. Especially breathtaking is the dreamlike early morning when river mist rises and a train crossing a bridge seems to float within it, a signature scene of the Tadami Line. The mist tends to form on early mornings in spring and autumn, when temperature differences are large.

Getting There

Board the Tadami Line at JR Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. A leading photography spot is the First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint in Mishima, reached by a footpath from the Oze Kaido Mishima-juku roadside station. Service is sparse, around three round trips a day, so check the timetable. By car, reach the viewpoints via National Route 252 from the Banetsu Expressway direction.

Practical Travel Notes

Because service is limited, checking the timetable is essential for both riding and photographing. If photography is your aim, arrive at the viewpoint a little before the trains passing time. For river mist, early mornings in spring and autumn are best. If you plan to combine riding and shooting, the trick is to use car and train in tandem. Allow half a day to a full day for riding and photographing the scenic sections. Along the line lie stops such as the thatched village of Mishima and Enzoji temple in Aizu-Yanaizu. Costs center on fares and meals, so a relaxed rail journey is easy to enjoy.

One Piece of Advice

Trains are very infrequent, so missing one means a long wait for the next. Build your day around the timetable. Photography spots feel most magical in the early morning. Combined with sightseeing in Aizu-Wakamatsu, the trip delivers both history and stunning scenery.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Admission: Visiting the Daiichi Tadamigawa Bridge Viewpoint is free of charge
• Parking: Use the parking lot of the Oze Kaido Mishima-juku roadside station on National Route 252. A walking path on the east side of the parking lot connects to the stairs at the viewpoint entrance, about a 5-minute walk
• Access (train + walking): It is about 3.5 km from Aizu-Miyashita Station on the JR Tadami Line to the roadside station, about 45 minutes on foot
• Access (town bus): Depart Aizu-Miyashita Station at 8:10 and get off at Michi-no-Eki Oze Kaido Mishima-juku, a ride of about 5 minutes. The one-way fare is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children aged 12 and under. No service on Sundays, public holidays, or during the New Year period. For the return trip you need to reserve the on-demand bus (ask the roadside station staff; departures from the roadside station are the first bus at 10:20, with reservations closing at 9:00, and the second bus at 13:20, with reservations closing at 12:00)
• Access (taxi): Yanaizu Taxi (0241-42-2120). It takes about 20 minutes from your call until the taxi reaches Aizu-Miyashita Station, and about 5 minutes from the station to the roadside station
• Bicycle rental: Available at the Mishima Town Tourism Exchange Hall Karankoron (about a 2-minute walk from Aizu-Miyashita Station). 500 yen for up to 4 hours, 1,000 yen maximum for a full day (up to 8 hours), and 500 yen to drop the bicycle off at the Aizu Yanaizu roadside station. Rentals are available only from around April to the end of November (not in winter). It takes about 15 minutes by bicycle from the tourism association to the roadside station
• Inquiries: Mishima Town Tourism Association (Tourism Exchange Hall Karankoron) / open 8:30-17:30, closed on Mondays (the following day when Monday is a public holiday) and during the New Year period, Tel 0241-48-5000
