Oku-Aizu Mishima Town Thatched Houses: Villages Frozen in Time Along the Tadami River

Mishima in Onuma District, Fukushima, is a small mountain town of roughly 1,200 people (about 1,450 in the 2020 census) tucked among the mountains of the Oku-Aizu region. It is one of Japan's heaviest snowfall areas, buried under several meters of snow in winter, and thatched farmhouses dot the gorge of the Tadami River, preserving a mountain-village scene often called a landscape of old Japan. This satoyama life, where daily living and nature are in harmony, offers visitors a sense of nostalgia and calm.

Highlights

No account of Mishima is complete without the JR Tadami Line that runs through it. Above all, the view of a train crossing the First Tadami River Bridge from an elevated observation deck, with the bridge reflected on the water, the surrounding mountains, and a dreamlike wrapping of snow or mist, captivates railway fans and photographers nationwide. The harmony of the ever-changing Tadami River and the passing train is genuinely breathtaking. The viewpoint overlooking the bridge is reached by a footpath from the Oze Kaido Mishima-juku roadside station.

Another highlight is the traditional craft of Oku-Aizu braided work. Using materials such as hiroro sedge, matatabi vine, and wild grapevine, this craft is designated a Traditional Craft Product by the national government. Passed down as winter handwork in the deep snow, the baskets and trays are sturdy and full of character, long loved as tools of daily life.

Season by Season

The Tadami Line and thatched villages have appeal in every season, but early summer green, autumn foliage, and winter snow are especially magical. The Furusato Koujin Matsuri (Hometown Craftspeople Festival), first held in 1987, gathers many artisans and enthusiasts from across the country each early summer for a chance to appreciate warm, handmade work. On early mornings from autumn into winter, river mist rises over the Tadami River and a train crossing the bridge may seem to float within it.

Getting There

The gateway to the town is Aizu-Miyashita Station on the JR Tadami Line. From the Tokyo direction, transfer to the Tadami Line at Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. The First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint is reached by a footpath from the Oze Kaido Mishima-juku roadside station. By car, take National Route 252 from Nishi-Aizu IC on the Banetsu Expressway. The Tadami Line runs only a few times a day, so check the timetable.

Practical Travel Notes

Because Tadami Line service is very limited, checking the timetable is essential for both riding and photography. The viewpoint is reached by climbing a footpath, so good footwear is reassuring. If you are shooting, arrive well before the trains passing time. For river mist, early mornings in spring and autumn are best. Allow about half a day for the viewpoint and a village stroll. Stopping at a braided-craft workshop or the roadside station lets you enjoy local handwork and specialties. Costs center on transport, meals, and souvenirs, ideal for a quiet mountain-village trip.

One Piece of Advice

As a heavy-snow area, come well prepared for cold and secure footing in winter. The First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint is especially dreamlike in autumn (October to November) when mist forms and in the snowy winter (January to February). Plan around the Tadami Line schedule and allow ample time to savor the timeless scenery of Oku-Aizu.

Daiichi Tadamigawa Bridge Viewpoint (Mishima Town)

• Access (on foot): A 5-minute walk from the parking lot of the Oze Kaido Mishima-juku roadside station on National Route 252. A walking path runs from the east side of the roadside station parking lot to the left of the Kawai Tunnel portal, and stairs lead up to the viewpoint
• Access (by the Tadami Line): It is about 3.5 km from JR Aizu-Miyashita Station to the roadside station, about 45 minutes on foot
• Town bus: No service on Sundays, public holidays, or during the New Year period. On the way there, the bus leaves JR Aizu-Miyashita Station at 8:10 (about a 5-minute ride to the roadside station); on the way back, the on-demand bus requires a reservation and leaves the roadside station on the first run at 10:20 (reservations close at 9:00) or the second run at 13:20 (reservations close at 12:00). The one-way fare is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children aged 12 and under
• Taxi: Yanaizu Taxi, 0241-42-2120 (about 5 minutes from Aizu-Miyashita Station to the roadside station)
• Bicycle rental: 500 yen for up to 4 hours, 1,000 yen maximum for a full day (up to 8 hours). Dropping the bicycle off at the Aizu Yanaizu roadside station costs 500 yen. Rentals are handled by the Mishima Town Tourism Exchange Hall Karankoron (only from around April to the end of November; not available in winter)
