Aizu-Wakamatsu Tsurugajo Castle β€” The Soul of Aizu

In the broad mountain basin of western Fukushima Prefecture, the city of Aizu-Wakamatsu preserves the proudest and most poignant warrior heritage in Tohoku. At its center stands Tsurugajo Castle β€” the "Crane Castle" β€” a beautifully restored five-story keep that served as the last stronghold of the Aizu domain in the 1868 Boshin War, when the pro-Shogunate Aizu warriors made a legendary resistance against the Meiji imperial forces that has become the defining story of samurai loyalty and tragedy in Japanese memory.

Highlights

Tsurugajo's distinctive red-tiled roof (reconstructed in 2011 to restore its original appearance) makes it one of Japan's most recognizable castles β€” the only Japanese castle with red-brown tiles. The five-story keep houses an excellent museum tracing the Aizu domain's history from its founding by the Hoshina clan through its catastrophic destruction in 1868. The 1868 siege lasted a month, and when the castle finally fell, the domain was abolished and its samurai either killed or exiled.

The grounds contain the Rinkaku tea house (Important Cultural Property) and cherry trees that make the castle park one of Tohoku's finest spring blossom sites. A cherry blossom festival here typically ranks among Japan's top castle-sakura combinations.

The surrounding city preserves remarkable samurai heritage: the Buke-yashiki (samurai residence complex), Sazaedo Temple's extraordinary spiral staircase pagoda, and the story of the Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps) β€” teenage samurai who took their own lives on Iimori Hill believing the castle had fallen.

Getting There & Tips

Aizu-Wakamatsu is accessible by train from Koriyama (about 1 hour) or Niigata (about 1 hour 40 minutes). The castle is a 10-minute bus ride from the station or 25-minute walk. Castle loop buses make sightseeing easy.

Best Time to Visit

Late April for cherry blossoms (one of Tohoku's finest castle-sakura combinations); autumn for foliage; any season for the castle museum and samurai heritage sites.
