Hirayu Onsen

The oldest of the springs in the Okuhida hot spring villages, Hirayu Onsen sits high at about 1,300 meters at the foot of Mount Norikura. Known for its abundant flow and as the gateway to Norikura, it serves as the hub for sightseeing across Okuhida.

Many open-air baths brim with rich water, letting you soak while gazing at the surrounding peaks. The nearby Hirayu Great Falls, counted among Japan finest waterfalls, is well worth a visit.

From spring to summer it is a base for highland walks and mountain climbing, autumn brings foliage, and winter offers snowy scenery and a frozen waterfall festival.

Access and Basic Information

It is about an hour by Nohi Bus from Takayama Station. The Hirayu Bus Terminal is the connecting point for the rest of Okuhida, Kamikochi, and the Matsumoto direction.

The elevation is high so it stays cool even in summer, and a light jacket for the evenings is reassuring.
