Known as a Takasaki specialty, the daruma bento is a station bento with mountain delicacies packed into a red daruma-shaped container. Takasaki is a major producer of the lucky daruma doll, and this bento reflecting that local character makes a fine travel keepsake. It is made by Takasaki Bento, and the station-bento version first appeared in 1960. The early containers were ceramic, later switching to the red daruma-shaped plastic case that gives it the familiar look of today.

Highlights

The dish is built on rice cooked chameshi-style, topped with a colorful array of bamboo shoots, shiitake, mountain vegetables, konnyaku, chestnut, burdock, and seasoned minced chicken. The gently sweet-savory seasoning has broad appeal, and the festive sight when you lift the lid is part of the charm. When you finish, the container doubles as a coin bank, a playful touch true to this bento. The daruma face reflects Takasaki tradition of daruma making, so the vessel itself feels like a souvenir.

Enjoying the Seasons

In the outing season, a box enjoyed while watching the passing scenery heightens the mood of the journey. At the New Year, drawing on the lucky daruma, it is sometimes chosen as a meal to celebrate a fresh start. Because it is made to taste good even when cool, you can enjoy it on the road at any time of day.

Access and Basic Information

You can buy it at the bento kiosks in JR Takasaki Station and at the station bento counter. As a transfer hub for Shinkansen and local lines toward the Joetsu and Hokuriku areas, picking one up before boarding adds to the pleasure aboard. It is usually stocked year-round as a standard station bento, and a limited edition reviving the ceramic container is sometimes offered.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Where to buy: mainly the station bento kiosks at JR Takasaki Station. Takasaki is about 50 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, an easy stop as a starting point for a trip.
  • Budget guide: it sits in an approachable price range as a station bento, sold as a single takeout box.
  • Takeout: as a boxed meal carried at room temperature, it suits eating aboard the train or at a hotel. The empty container can be taken home as a coin bank.
  • Nearby spots: the Takasaki Byakue Kannon and Shorinzan Darumaji, famous for daruma making, are in the city, so you can pair it with daruma culture.
  • Note: contents and specifications can change by season, so check the latest details at the station counter.

A Quick Tip

Be sure to take the container home after eating. Displayed as a daruma coin bank, it keeps the memory of your Gunma journey alive in daily life.
