Doteyaki

πŸ¦‘ Osaka|June 25, 2026

Doteyaki

Doteyaki is a familiar dish in Osaka taverns, beef tendon simmered slowly in miso and sweet rice wine. Cooked over a long time, the tendon turns meltingly tender and is thoroughly infused with a sweet miso sauce. Often served on skewers, it is a humble favorite long enjoyed as an accompaniment to beer and sake in the taverns of Shinsekai and the old downtown.

Highlights

- The texture of beef tendon simmered until meltingly tender - A deep richness from the sweet miso sauce soaked in - The downtown mood of nibbling it easily off a skewer - The accent of green onion or seven spice scattered on top

Enjoying the Seasons

Doteyaki bubbling away in its pot is an exceptional drinking snack for warming the body in cold weather. Enjoyed all year round as a tavern staple, it also pairs perfectly with cold beer in summer, coloring Osaka nights in every season.

Access and Basic Information

- Area: taverns in Shinsekai, Tennoji, and the old downtown - Access: the area around Dobutsuen mae or Ebisucho Station on the subway is convenient - Price range: roughly 100 to 200 yen per skewer - Often enjoyed alongside dishes at kushikatsu shops

A Quick Tip

Because doteyaki has a robust miso sauce, it is also superb paired with white rice. If you spot it at a kushikatsu shop, order some between the fried skewers. The sweet miso also refreshes the palate, keeping you happy to the very end.
