Miyajima Misen — The Mystical Energy of Hiroshima's Sacred Mountain

Rising 535 meters from the sacred island of Miyajima (officially Itsukushima), Mt. Misen is the highest point of one of Hiroshima Prefecture's most hallowed grounds. The mountain is said to have been opened by the great monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), and it still draws many worshippers and hikers as a power spot. From the summit you can take in the beauty of the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea, while the trails wrapped in primeval forest and the great boulders lend this mountain its solemn atmosphere.

At the Reikado (Hall of the Sacred Flame) partway up Misen, a fire said to have been lit by Kobo Daishi during his ascetic practice has burned continuously for over 1,200 years as the never-dying flame, and it is said to have provided the source fire for the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. From the summit observation deck the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the city of Hiroshima spread widely into view. The ropeway lets you climb easily to near the summit, while forest-bathing hikes up the Momijidani, Daishoin, and Omoto courses are also popular.

In spring the contrast of the sea and young leaves seen from Misen is exceptional. In summer the shade of the leafy trails is cool, and an early morning hike is comfortable. Autumn colors the whole mountain, and the contrast with the blue of the Seto Inland Sea is superb. Winter brings the clearest air and the finest views, and the mist-wrapped slopes take on a mystical expression.

Access and Basic Information

From JR Miyajimaguchi Station a ferry of about 10 minutes reaches the Miyajima pier. From the pier it is about 25 minutes on foot to the Momijidani station of the Misen Ropeway. The ropeway (Momijidani to Shishiiwa) costs 2,000 yen round trip for adults and 1,000 yen for children, with a ride of about 14 minutes. Operating hours are roughly 9:00 to 16:00 (last descent 16:30). From Shishiiwa station it is a further 30 minutes on foot one way to the summit. A hike on foot alone is about 1.5 to 2 hours one way.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: The foliage peak is usually late October to mid November. To avoid crowds, start climbing early in the morning.
• Time needed: Allow around three hours for the ropeway plus a summit round trip, and about half a day round trip for a full hike.
• Avoiding crowds: The ropeway can form long lines in the foliage season, so an early start near opening is the sweet spot.
• Nearby spots: Combining Itsukushima Shrine, Daishoin, and Momijidani Park at the base fills a full day.
• Budget sense: Even with the ropeway round trip (2,000 yen for adults) and Itsukushima Shrine admission (300 yen for adults), sightseeing and transport costs run from around a thousand yen and up.

A Quick Tip

Many deer, regarded as messengers of the gods, live on Miyajima, and though tame they must not be fed. Take care that bags and paper are not nibbled. Trails can turn muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are reassuring. At night day-trippers leave, and you can savor the quiet hours around Itsukushima Shrine.
