Noboribetsu Onsen

Noboribetsu is one of Hokkaido representative hot spring resorts. Its source is Jigokudani, an explosion crater about 450 meters across that gushes some 3,000 liters of hot water every minute. Because several spring types such as sulfur springs and salt springs gather in one place, it is nicknamed the department store of hot springs, and the joy of bath-hopping never ends.

Highlights

- The walking trails of Jigokudani, where white steam rises from reddish brown rock - A reported nine spring types, with each inn offering water of a different character - The demon statues lining the town and the powerful demon fireworks event

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring to autumn, strolling the exploration trails around Jigokudani feels wonderful, and autumn in particular paints the rugged cliffs with colored leaves. Winter brings a dreamlike scene woven from snow and white steam, and the evening illumination makes the rising vapor glow with mystery.

Access and Basic Information

- About 15 minutes by bus from JR Noboribetsu Station - About 10 minutes by car from Noboribetsu Higashi IC on the Doo Expressway - Roughly one hour by car from New Chitose Airport - The Jigokudani trail takes about 20 minutes to loop

A Quick Tip

Since each spring type has different benefits, combine day-use baths to enjoy a tour of the waters. Keep your soak short in the strong sulfur baths and remember to stay hydrated.
