Toyako Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

Lake Toya, spreading at the heart of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, is the third largest caldera lake in Japan. A hot spring town overlooking the water lies along its southern shore. • The long-run fireworks are held every night, usually from late April to the end of October, with a launch of about 20 minutes. Fireworks rising as the boat moves color the lake in a scene unique to Lake Toya
• During the fireworks season, a viewing boat also runs so you can watch up close from the water. You can also see them from lake-side rooms or the shore promenade, so you can choose your viewing style
• Near the town, geopark observation spots tracing the marks of volcanic eruptions are dotted about. Paired with a stroll or a cruise, you can enjoy Lake Toya nature over a full day
• The best time is the evening from late April to the end of October, when fireworks rise. A day trip fills half a day with a bath and a stroll, but to catch the fireworks, work an evening stay into your plan

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Spring quality: Sodium-calcium chloride spring (according to the Toyako Onsen Tourist Association). Indications include cuts, peripheral circulatory disorders, sensitivity to cold, depressive states and dry skin. Toya Sun Palace Resort & Spa lists its water as a sodium chloride-sulfate spring, a hypotonic, neutral, high-temperature spring with a pH of 6.89
• Source: Drilled-well system. There are 12 source wells, drawing water from depths of 60 m to 150 m
• Day-trip bathing (Toya Sun Palace Resort & Spa): Open only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and during the long spring, summer and winter holiday breaks. 10:00 to 15:00 (reception until 14:00), 2,000 yen for adults and 1,500 yen for children aged 3 to elementary school age. In addition to the large baths you can also use the "Water land" pool. Day-trip service is sometimes suspended or the available facilities reduced, so be sure to check the notices on the official site
• Open-air bath: Available. Overnight guests can use the large baths and open-air bath from 5:00 to 10:00 and from 14:00 to 25:00
• Towels: Toya Sun Palace offers rentals, at 200 yen for a bath towel and 100 yen for a face towel
• Free footbath "Doryu no Yu": A footbath fed with 100% natural spring water, free to use. Open 9:00 to 21:00, and in winter (November 1 to April 27) 10:00 to 16:00. It stands along the lakeside promenade in front of the Toya Kanko Hotel (36-4 Toyako Onsen, Toyako-cho), and there is also a vending machine selling towels for drying your feet
• Long Run Fireworks Festival: In 2026 it runs from Tuesday, April 28 to Saturday, October 31, for about 20 minutes from 20:45 every night. Because the fireworks are launched from a boat moving across the lake, they can be seen from a wide stretch of the shore
• How to find a day-trip bath: The Toyako Onsen Tourist Association publishes a list of day-trip bathing facilities in the hot spring town (April 2026 edition). Since opening times can change depending on how busy each place is, visitors are advised to contact each facility in advance. For inquiries, contact the association (0142-75-2446)
• Access (rail and bus): About 20 minutes by Donan Bus from Toya Station on the JR Muroran Main Line, getting off at the "Toyako Onsen" bus terminal. From New Chitose Airport, the JR route New Chitose Airport - Minami-Chitose - Toya (using a limited express) takes about 1 hour 30 minutes
• Access (car): The Abuta-Toyako IC on the Do-o Expressway is the nearest interchange. It is 109.1 km from the Chitose IC to the Abuta-Toyako IC on the Do-o Expressway. From Sapporo via National Route 230 (through Jozankei and the Nakayama Pass) it takes about 2 hours 10 minutes
• Footing: The hot spring town consists mainly of flat streets running along the lakeshore, and the promenade and footbath can all be reached on foot. However, one street back from the lake there are stretches of sloping road
• Winter notes: In winter the footbath's opening hours are shorter, and routes crossing the mountains, such as over the Nakayama Pass, require equipment prepared for snow and ice
• Suggested time: About an hour if you only bathe. If you also want the lakeside stroll and the fireworks, it is more relaxed to plan a stay that runs into the night
