Sankei-en Garden: Yokohama's Japanese Garden and Historic Buildings

On a hill near Yokohama's harbor spreads a hushed Japanese garden that feels like stepping back in time. Sankeien is a vast garden created by Hara Sankei, an industrialist who made his fortune in the raw-silk trade, where historic buildings relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura, and elsewhere blend with seasonal flowers. Access is about 8 minutes by bus from Negishi Station on the JR Negishi Line, alighting at the Honmoku bus stop, then about an 8-minute walk. Buses also run from Yokohama and Sakuragicho Stations. Admission is 900 yen for adults (high school age and above) and 200 yen for children (elementary and junior high students). Opening hours are 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30). There is paid parking for those arriving by car. Since touring the spacious grounds takes time, comfortable walking shoes are reassuring.
