Muroto Cape Geopark Drive: Itinerary & Timings (Kochi)

Course Route

9:00 Start at Muroto Cape Walk the seaside path and take in the jagged rocks formed by uplift along with the statue of Nakaoka Shintaro. At the tip of the cape you can look out over the wide horizon of the Pacific.

10:00 To the Muroto Cape Lighthouse Visit the white lighthouse on the height and enjoy its lens, among the most powerful in Japan, and the sweeping panorama of the sea. It is a bit of an uphill walk to the lighthouse, but the view when you arrive is exceptional.

11:00 Stroll the Ranshoyu path Walk the coastal trail lined with strange rocks carved by the waves and feel the power of the land. Rocks that tell of past uplift spread out at your feet, letting you sense the vast span of the earth time.

12:00 Break at the roadside station Stop at the roadside station overlooking the sea, taste local seafood and specialties, and take a rest. It is handy for a break along the drive or for looking for souvenirs.

You can see up close its dynamic landforms and nature, such as the rare workings of land that is still slowly rising and communities of subtropical plants.
• Muroto Cape Lighthouse: A white lighthouse standing on the height, fitted with one of Japan largest first class Fresnel lenses (about 2.6 meters in diameter). Its light reaches about 49 kilometers (26.5 nautical miles), among the longest in the country. It was first lit in 1899.
• Access: About two hours by car from central Kochi. Since the sights are scattered along the coastline, traveling by car is convenient. There are walking sections such as the Ranshoyu path, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
• Nearby: Around Muroto Cape there is a roadside station overlooking the sea where you can taste local seafood and specialties, handy for a break along the drive.

• What this course assumes: About half a day (a full day if you include the round trip from central Kochi City) / a car is the basic means of transport. The highlights are scattered along the coastline and public transport is very infrequent, so a rental car is the realistic option.
• Muroto Global Geopark Center: 1810-2 Murotomisaki-cho, Muroto City, open 9:00-17:00 (Tel. 0887-22-5161). Besides the exhibits there is a geo theater, geo cafe, geo shop and an information desk where you can ask for advice on planning your route. The nearest bus stop is Muroto Sekai Geopark Center.
• Muroto City Tourism Association: 6939-40 Murotomisaki-cho, Muroto City, reception hours 9:00-17:00 (Tel. 0887-22-0574).
• Access by car: About 80 km and 2 hours from Kochi City via National Route 55; about 130 km and 2 hours 50 minutes from Tokushima City; about 190 km and 3 hours 20 minutes from Takamatsu City via the Takamatsu/Kochi Expressway; about 220 km and 3 hours 40 minutes from Matsuyama City via the Matsuyama/Kochi Expressway.
• Access by public transport: From JR Kochi Station, take the Dosan Line and the Tosa Kuroshio Railway Gomen-Nahari Line to Nahari Station (about 1 hour 30 minutes), then a Kochi Tobu Kotsu bus (bound for Muroto Global Geopark Center or Kannoura) for about 60 minutes. From the Tokushima side, take the JR Mugi Line from JR Tokushima Station and the Asa Kaigan Railway Asato Line to Kannoura Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes using a limited express), then a Kochi Tobu Kotsu bus bound for the Aki business office for about 50 minutes. Tokushima Bus highway buses are also available from the Osaka and Tokushima areas.
• Bus stops to aim for: For Cape Muroto, use the Kochi Tobu Kotsu bus stop Muroto Misaki; for Mikurodo Cave, get off at Misaki Hotel-mae on the same line and walk 3 minutes.
• If you stop at Mikurodo Cave: Entry to the cave is possible from 8:00 to 17:00, and wearing a helmet is required for safety (helmets are lent out). In bad weather the cave may be closed. Together with the neighboring Shinmeikutsu Cave, it is said to be a place of ascetic training associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai).
• Points to note and safety advice: The Ranshou promenade includes sections where you walk over rocks at the water's edge. Stay away on days with high waves or strong winds. The climb up to the lighthouse is a continuous uphill, so wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time. Winds are often strong along the coast, so a jacket is reassuring.
