Nikobuchi, in Ino Town, Agawa District, Kochi Prefecture, is a mysterious waterfall basin on a tributary of the Niyodo River, one of the clearest streams in Japan. The blue shown by its crystal-clear water is called Niyodo Blue, shifting in countless ways from emerald green to deep cobalt blue depending on the angle of the sun, the season, the weather, and the water volume. Long held to be home to a great serpent that is the form of the water deity, it is also a sacred place that locals never approached.
