Hitoyoshi Onsen in a Riverside Castle Town

๐Ÿฏ Kumamoto|July 1, 2026

Hitoyoshi Onsen

In the south of Kumamoto Prefecture, the Kuma River flows serenely through a basin ringed by mountains, and along both its banks spreads Hitoyoshi Onsen. Long prosperous as the castle town of the Sagara clan, this historic land has hot water rising all over, and you can enjoy its blessings at the scattered public baths and inns. It is a calm spa area where river, history, and hot water sit close together.

Highlights

The pleasure of Hitoyoshi lies in combining the baths with a stroll through the castle town. Old-style public baths are dotted about the streets, each offering its own character of water to enjoy with ease. On the Kuma River, counted among Japan three swiftest currents, boat cruising is a specialty, letting you feel the beauty of the gorge amid the spray. Castle ruins and old shrines and temples remain, and a walk tracing the marks of history is another highlight.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring adds cherry blossoms at the castle ruins and along the river, wrapping the basin in soft color. Summer brings the cooling spray of the river cruise against a deep-green gorge. Autumn dresses the surrounding mountains in colored leaves, and winter paints a dreamlike scene with the morning mist typical of a basin. In every season the view held by river and mountain sets off a round of baths.

Access and Basic Information

Hitoyoshi lies in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Connected to many places by rail and expressway, it is convenient to use the town as a base for exploring the surroundings. Public baths and river cruises may change hours and operation with the season and weather, so it is wise to check in advance. The town center is compact enough to explore on foot.

A Quick Tip

Combining a round of the public baths with a cruise on the Kuma River lets you fully savor the appeal of Hitoyoshi. A soak after playing on the water is a special reward.
