Yatsushiro Shrine

Yatsushiro Shrine in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is an old shrine also cherished under the name Myoken-gu. Together with Soma Myoken in Fukushima Prefecture and Nose Myoken in Osaka Prefecture, it is counted among the three great Myoken of Japan, and it comprises three shrines: the upper, middle, and lower halls. Its principal deities, Amenominakanushi-no-Kami and Kunitokotachi-no-Mikoto, are enshrined here, and a tradition holds that it enshrines the Myoken deity who came across the sea. It has long drawn deep faith as the general guardian deity of the Yatsushiro region. Today the lower hall serves as the main shrine and the center of worship.

The greatest highlight is the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival held in November. Centered on the descent on November 22 and the ascent on the 23rd, a splendid sacred procession unfolds as one of the leading festivals of Kyushu. In spring and autumn you can enjoy a stroll through the calm precincts, and at New Year it bustles with first visits. Throughout the year, worshippers come to pray for warding off misfortune and household safety.
