Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Togetsukyo Bridge โ€” Famous Scenery of Western Kyoto

Western Kyoto's most celebrated natural landmarks โ€” the towering Sagano Bamboo Grove and the graceful Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Oi River โ€” together form a scenic pairing that has defined Arashiyama's identity for centuries. Whether glimpsed in classical paintings, encountered on morning walks, or experienced at the golden hour of sunset, these two landmarks offer an enduring encounter with the landscape beauty that has made Kyoto legendary.

Highlights

The Sagano Bamboo Grove begins just north of Tenryu-ji's rear garden and extends for several hundred metres toward Okochi Sanso villa. The bamboo here, cultivated since the Edo period, has grown to extraordinary height and density, creating an acoustic and visual environment unlike anything else in Japan. The hollow sound of stalks clicking in the wind and the green half-light filtering through the canopy transform even a crowded afternoon visit into something memorable.

Togetsukyo โ€” literally "Moon-Crossing Bridge" โ€” takes its name from a poem by Emperor Kameyama, who observed the moon appearing to traverse its span. The current bridge, rebuilt in reinforced concrete with a traditional wooden appearance, stretches 155 metres across the Oi River. On either side, seasonal boat traffic, fishing boats, and recreational craft animate the water, while the wooded hillside of Mt. Arashiyama rises behind. Cherry blossoms in spring and maple colour in autumn make the bridge view among the most photographed in Kyoto.

Between the grove and bridge, the Arashiyama district packs a remarkable concentration of cultural experiences: rickshaw rides through narrow lanes, matcha sweets in riverside cafes, silk weaving workshops, and the ancient Jojakko-ji and Nison-in temple gardens hidden in the hills above.

Getting There & Tips

Saga-Arashiyama Station on the JR San-in Line is 15 minutes from Kyoto Station. The grove is a 10-minute walk from the station. Rickshaw service operates throughout the district. Visit the grove before 8am or after 5pm for the most immersive experience.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (mid to late November) for maple colour framing the bridge. Spring cherry blossoms in early April are equally spectacular. The Arashiyama Hanatouro light festival in December illuminates the grove and riverbanks with lanterns after dark.
