Arashiyama and Sagano Bamboo Grove โ Kyoto's Treasure of Scenery and Culture
Arashiyama and Sagano Bamboo Grove โ Kyoto's Treasure of Scenery and Culture
At the western edge of Kyoto, where the Oi River curves past wooded hillsides and ancient temple gardens, lies Arashiyama โ one of Japan's most celebrated scenic districts. Here, a famous grove of towering bamboo, a collection of extraordinary temples and gardens, traditional boat travel on the river, and the gentle rhythms of a preserved historic townscape combine into a destination that rewards visitors whether they arrive for a quick morning stroll or a full day of deep exploration.
Highlights
The Sagano Bamboo Grove is the visual centrepiece of Arashiyama: a dense stand of giant bamboo through which a narrow path winds for several hundred metres, the stalks rising fifteen metres or more on either side, their canopy filtering the sky into pale green light. The sound of wind through bamboo here has been designated one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan." Early morning, before the tourist crowds arrive, this path offers a near-meditative experience.
Tenryu-ji, one of Kyoto's great Rinzai Zen temple complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies at the grove's edge. Its Sogenchi garden โ designed in the 14th century by the celebrated Zen monk Muso Soseki โ is considered one of Japan's finest, using the borrowed scenery of Mt. Arashiyama as its backdrop.
Togetsukyo Bridge, the elegant span crossing the Oi River, is the district's beloved landmark and the staging point for traditional cormorant fishing (ukai) performances on summer evenings. Hozugawa River boat rides โ descending 16 kilometres of gentle rapids through river gorge scenery โ offer another unforgettable Arashiyama experience.
Just north, the quiet lanes of Sagano lead to Jojakko-ji, Nison-in, and Gioji โ temple gardens of moss and maple that are among Kyoto's most intimate and beautiful.
Getting There & Tips
From Kyoto Station, take the JR San-in Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station (about 15 minutes) or the Hankyu Arashiyama Line. The Sagano Romantic Train (reservation required) runs seasonally through the river gorge to Kameoka. Visit the bamboo grove before 8am for the best experience.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (mid-November) for maples. Spring cherry blossoms along the river are magnificent. The summer ukai season runs May to October. Winter visits are serene and uncrowded, with occasional snow adding exceptional beauty.
