Ise Jingu and Toba-Shima — Shrine Pilgrimage and Ama Diver Culture

A journey through southeastern Mie Prefecture reveals two deeply intertwined traditions: the spiritual grandeur of Ise Jingu and the maritime heritage of the Ama, Japan's legendary women divers. Together they form one of the most culturally rich travel itineraries in the country, blending ancient Shinto reverence with the living traditions of people who have harvested the sea by breath-held diving for over two thousand years.

Highlights

Begin at Ise Jingu, the spiritual heart of Japan, where the Inner Shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami among soaring cedar forests. Follow the prescribed pilgrim route across the Uji Bridge and through the forested precinct, pausing at the Isuzu River for ritual hand-washing. After exploring the Okage Yokocho shopping street for Ise udon and Akafuku mochi, continue south to Toba.

Toba City centers on Toba Bay, a scattering of islands connected by ferry. The Mikimoto Pearl Island tells the story of Mikimoto Kokichi, who developed the cultured pearl industry here in the late 19th century. Demonstrations by Ama divers in traditional white diving dress are held daily, offering a window into a practice that was once widespread across the Ise-Shima coast.

From Toba, take a short ferry to Toshi Island or Sugashima Island, where small fishing communities preserve the Ama tradition most authentically. Several Ama huts (amagoya) on the Shima Peninsula now welcome visitors for freshly grilled seafood — abalone, sea urchin, turban shells — cooked right before your eyes by the divers themselves.

The Ise-Shima National Park encompasses the entire region, protecting its intricate ria coastline and rich marine biodiversity.

Getting There & Tips

From Nagoya, take the Kintetsu Limited Express to Toba Station (about 100 minutes). Ferries to the islands depart from Toba Port. The Ama hut experience at Hachiman-kamado requires advance reservations. Combine the two destinations over one to two days for a full experience.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer brings warm sea conditions perfect for understanding the Ama diving context. The Ise Jingu area is extremely busy during New Year and Golden Week; weekday visits are recommended.
