Meoto Iwa: The Wedded Rocks of Futamigaura

Meoto Iwa, the Wedded Rocks off Futamigaura in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, are sacred rocks standing within the precincts of Futami Okitama Shrine. A large and a small rock lean together, joined by a thick shimenawa rope of twisted rice straw, and this image has long been cherished as a symbol of marital harmony and good matches. The rocks serve as a place from which to worship the Okitama sacred stone, said to rest in the sea about 700 meters offshore. They are also famed as a spot to watch the sunrise rise between the pair of rocks.

Highlights

The larger rock (the husband rock) and the smaller rock (the wife rock) are seen as a couple standing close and devoted to one another, and they have drawn faith for blessings of marital harmony and good matches. The great shimenawa that binds them is ceremonially replaced three times a year, in May, September, and December.

The Futami Okitama Shrine that watches over the rocks enshrines Sarutahiko Okami and is known for blessings of guidance and travel safety. Many frog statues are dedicated around the grounds, reflecting Japanese wordplay in which the word for frog also means to return, drawing wishes to return home safely. In earlier times, pilgrims purified body and mind here at Futamigaura before visiting Ise Jingu, a custom known as hamasangu.

Enjoying the Seasons

You can visit year round, but to catch the sun rising between the two rocks, the period from May to July around the summer solstice is especially good. On clear days a mystical scene may appear, with the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji joining the sunrise. From autumn into winter the air grows clear and the contrast of sea and rock stands out sharply, and the sunrise seen in the crisp winter morning air is memorable in its own way.

Access and Basic Information

• Access: About a 15-minute walk from Futaminoura Station on the JR Sangu Line. A bus from Iseshi Station is also convenient.

• Best time of day: For the sunrise, arriving 30 minutes to an hour before the sunrise time gives you room to secure a good spot. Around the summer solstice crowds gather early, so arriving before dawn is safest.
• Time needed: Visiting only the rocks and Futami Okitama Shrine takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Adding a stroll along the coast, allow around an hour and a half for a relaxed visit.
• Nearby spots: The Ise Sea Paradise aquarium and the Futamigaura beach are within walking distance, and by car the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu is about 15 minutes away. Pairing this with an Ise pilgrimage makes a classic half-day plan.
• Budget: Worship itself is free. Including parking and a few amulets, a visit costs from a few hundred to around a thousand yen.

A Quick Tip

If you come for the sunrise, check the weather forecast and the sunrise time in advance. The seafront is chilly morning and evening in every season, so a light jacket you can throw on is reassuring. Combined with a visit to Ise Jingu, you can retrace the old hamasangu custom and deepen the memory of your journey.
