Onagawa Travel Guide: Fresh Fish Market and a Town Reborn in Miyagi

Onagawa in Oshika District, Miyagi, was severely damaged by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Onagawa Station and Onagawa Onsen Yupoppo

The Onagawa Station building was designed by architect Shigeru Ban, and its white roof evokes a black-tailed gull spreading its wings. It opened in March 2015, and a day-use hot spring, Onagawa Onsen Yupoppo, occupies the second floor. From the third-floor observation area you can take in a sweeping view of Onagawa Bay, a fine spot to rest during your trip.

Access and Practical Information

• The hub is JR Ishinomaki Line Onagawa Station. The commercial area (Sea Pal Pia Onagawa and Hamaterasu) is a short walk away, and you can walk almost in a straight line from the station toward the sea.
