Kinkasan — Sacred Gold Island of Fortune and Matchmaking

Off the Pacific coast of the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture, accessible only by boat, Kinkasan is one of the most sacred sites in Tohoku, counted with Osorezan and the Dewa Sanzan as one of the Three Sacred Places of Oshu. Tradition says that worshipping here three years running means you will never want for money, which has made it an immensely popular power spot for fortune. The whole island is a divine precinct, and its sacred atmosphere leaves a lasting impression.

Highlights

Kogane-yama Shrine is dedicated to Kanayamahiko-no-Kami and Kanayamahime-no-Kami, guardians of metal and wealth, and the island is also known as one of the Five Benzaiten of Japan. Wild deer live along the approach, protected as messengers of the deities, and their calm presence among visitors deepens the sacred mood. The main hall stands in deep forest and stays busy with worshippers seeking fortune, good matches, and business success. At the islands highest point, 445 meters, sits the inner sanctuary of Owatatsumi Shrine, with sweeping views of the peninsula and the Pacific. Because the island shrine carried its faith through the Great East Japan Earthquake, it has since been known as an island that watches over recovery.

Seasons

Spring (March to May): Boat service is stable and worship is easy; fresh green brings the island to life. Summer (June to August): Enjoy the bracing crossing and the islands greenery; early morning worship is especially refreshing. Autumn (September to November): Autumn color and sea views are beautiful, with calmer crowds for a relaxed visit. Winter (December to February): Boats may be suspended in rough weather, but worship in the crisp winter air is exceptional.

Getting There

• Boat: From Ayukawa Port on the Oshika Peninsula to the Kogane-yama Shrine pier, about 20 minutes by scheduled boat and about 15 minutes by sea taxi
• To Ayukawa Port: Miyako bus toward Ayukawa from JR Ishinomaki Station; times vary by route, so check ahead
• Frequency: The number of sailings changes by season and day, so confirm times, fares, and status on the operator's official site
• Lodging: The shrine lodge on the island allows an overnight stay for worship, by reservation
• Time on the island: Two to three hours for worship alone, or about half a day round trip if you climb to the summit
• Note: Boats are cancelled in strong wind or high waves, so checking the weather is essential

• Best season and time: Spring through autumn, when seas are calm, is easiest for the crossing. Take an early boat and worship in the morning to avoid crowds.

• Avoiding crowds: The first three days of the New Year and major festival dates are busy; weekdays are calmer.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Worship: If you are visiting freely, you may offer your prayers at the worship hall
• Ogoma prayer rituals: Held on the hour every hour from 9:30 a.m. (the first ritual at 7:30 a.m. is only for those who stayed at the shrine the previous night). Each ritual takes about 20 minutes, or about 30 minutes when a kagura dance is dedicated. Times may change due to festivals and other events
• Offering fees: For general individuals, 5,000 yen or more for a medium tablet, 10,000 yen or more for a large tablet, 30,000 yen or more for an extra-large tablet, and 50,000 yen or more for a special extra-large tablet (all inscribed on wooden tablets). Groups of 15 or more pay 3,000 yen or more (inscribed on paper tablets)
• Goshuin: For the time being, only pre-written seals are available
• From the pier to the shrine: The shrine's shuttle vehicle, which used to operate, is currently suspended due to a vehicle breakdown (official notice dated July 9, 2026). There is no outlook for resuming the service, so visitors must walk from the port to the precincts
• Boats from Ayukawa Port: The medium-sized boat (70 passengers) runs every Sunday, costing 3,000 yen per person round trip and taking 20 minutes. The small boat (12 passengers) takes 15 minutes and costs 3,500 yen per person round trip for parties of five or more; for fewer than five people, the charter fare is 17,500 yen. On weekdays, motorboats run on an irregular schedule (inquiries: Kinkasan Route Business Cooperative, 0225-44-1850)
• Boats from Onagawa Port: The medium-sized boat (62 passengers) runs only on Sundays and public holidays, departing Onagawa Port at 11:00 and Kinkasan at 13:30, costing 5,000 yen per person round trip and taking 45 minutes (inquiries: Ushio Planning, 0225-98-9038)
• Bus to Ayukawa Port: Take the Miyako bus from in front of JR Ishinomaki Station to the terminus, Ayukawa Port; 1,440 yen one way for adults, about 1 hour 30 minutes
