Ebino Kogen Onsen

Cradled by the Kirishima mountain range on a plateau about twelve hundred meters high, Ebino Kogen Onsen wells up amid the peaks. Surrounded by summits such as Mount Karakunidake, this mountain spa lets you enjoy the earth given gifts of volcanic activity together with wonderfully clear air.

Highlights

From the baths of the plateau lodgings you can view the ridgeline of Karakunidake, which changes its expression with the seasons. Slopes where sulfur was once mined and scattered crater lakes spread around you, scenery only found in volcanic terrain. Sinking into an open air bath, you feel the cool breeze that comes with the high elevation drift pleasantly past.

Enjoying the Seasons

In early summer the plateau blushes pale crimson with Miyama Kirishima azaleas, drawing many hikers. Summer brings people seeking a cool retreat, and autumn tints the grasslands and woods in gold. In winter a bath while gazing at snow dusted Karakunidake is exceptional, with the hushed plateau spring waiting quietly.

Access and Basic Information

A car is convenient, climbing the prefectural road up to the plateau from the Ebino interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. It sits near the trailhead for Karakunidake and is beloved as a spring to visit before or after a climb. Some facilities also welcome day visitors.

A Quick Tip

The plateau is markedly cooler than the lowlands, and even in summer mornings and evenings turn chilly. Bringing something to layer on gives peace of mind. If you pair it with a hike, a soak after descending eases the tiredness before you head home.
