Aoshima Onsen

South of Miyazaki City, along the coast facing Aoshima island cloaked in subtropical plants, spreads Aoshima Onsen. Known as a spring welling up in a resort area facing the Pacific, it greets travelers with a setting full of southern atmosphere. Boasting an abundant flow of water, it has long been cherished by women as a beauty bath.

Highlights

The bicarbonate and sodium chloride waters have a distinctive silky feel that blends into the skin. From the baths of seaside inns you can view the coastline where the wavy rock formation known as the Devils Washboard stretches out, letting you take in southern scenery as you soak. Many visitors combine a visit with a prayer at Aoshima Shrine.

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring into summer the subtropical greenery grows lush and seaside strolls are delightful. Summer buzzes with people enjoying the baths alongside sea bathing, and autumn offers exceptional soaks while gazing at a calm sea. Even in winter it stays relatively mild, and a bath before the blue sea makes for a truly southern interlude.

Access and Basic Information

It is within walking distance of Aoshima Station on the JR Nichinan Line, and about thirty minutes by car from central Miyazaki City. Being near Miyazaki Airport, it fits easily as the start or end of a trip. Some inns welcome day visitors, so you can stop by casually alongside sightseeing in Aoshima.

A Quick Tip

Combining it with a walk to Aoshima Shrine and the Devils Washboard lets you enjoy a full half day of southern mood. The midday sun is strong, so if you walk the shore do not forget a hat and water.
