Kitagou Onsen
In the Kitagou district of Nichinan City, deep in the green mountains, Kitagou Onsen wells up. Close to the scenic Inohae Gorge, it is a quiet spa hamlet embraced by rich forest. The water drawn from far underground is colorless and clear and wraps the skin gently.
Highlights
The bicarbonate spring is smooth and is said to leave the skin sleek after a bath. In the surrounding Inohae Gorge you can walk streamside paths past waterfalls and giant trees, and the chance to enjoy both hot spring and forest walking is a charm unique to Kitagou.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring the gorge is wrapped in budding green, and in summer the shaded paths invite cool relief. Autumn colors the hills, letting you enjoy the shifting scenery as you soak. In winter you can spend a luxurious stretch of time with the quiet spring almost to yourself.
Access and Basic Information
It is only a few minutes by car from Kitagou Station on the JR Nichinan Line. It is also close to the Nichinan Kitagou interchange on the Higashi Kyushu Expressway, convenient for a stop by car. At the mouth of the gorge there is a free foot bath for a rest after strolling, and some inns welcome day visitors.
A Quick Tip
Pairing the hot spring with a walk in Inohae Gorge is well worth it. If you walk the gorge, set out in comfortable shoes, and soaking after working up a sweat is the classic way to make the most of Kitagou.
