Tsuno Shrine โ The Ichinomiya of Hyuga Province, Ancient Shrine of Matchmaking
Tsuno Shrine โ The Ichinomiya of Hyuga Province
In the quiet town of Tsuno in central Miyazaki Prefecture, Tsuno Shrine holds the distinction of ichinomiya โ first shrine of the historical Hyuga Province, meaning it was considered the most spiritually significant shrine in the region during the ancient provincial system. This distinction brings with it a gravity and a careful preservation of ritual that infuses the shrine's atmosphere with genuine historical depth.
Highlights
The approach to Tsuno Shrine passes through a grove of ancient trees that immediately signals the antiquity of the site. The main hall, rebuilt in the Edo period in the gongen-zukuri style that blends shrine and Buddhist temple architectural elements, is an impressive structure surrounded by stone lanterns donated by generations of devotees. The principal deity is Ame-no-Oshihomimi no Mikoto, a divine figure connected to the mythological age of the gods who, in Japanese religious geography, is particularly associated with the Hyuga region โ the land of sun, from which the imperial line is said to originate. The shrine's honden (inner sanctuary) is rarely opened to the public, giving the complex an appropriate sense of sacred reserve. A magnificent camphor tree stands near the main hall.
Getting There & Tips
From Miyazaki Station, take the JR Nippo Main Line to Tsuno Station (about 30 minutes), then a 10-minute taxi to the shrine. Alternatively, the shrine is accessible by bus from central Tsuno. Allow 45โ60 minutes for the shrine visit. The surrounding town of Tsuno is known for its traditional agricultural landscape of rice paddies and cedar-forested hills.
Best Time to Visit
The main annual festival (October) features traditional music, horseback archery, and ceremonial processions. Spring brings cherry blossoms to the approach. The surrounding landscape is lovely in early summer when rice paddies fill with water and reflect the sky.
