Shirahone Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

On the eastern slope of Mount Norikura in the Northern Alps of Matsumoto City, Shirahone Onsen is a secluded spa nestled in the mountains at about 1,400 meters elevation. Its distinctive water, which turns milky white on contact with the air, has captivated visitors for centuries. Set deep in a valley, it offers quiet hours of soaking.

Access and Basic Information

It is about one hour by car from the Matsumoto interchange on the Nagano Expressway via National Route 158 and other roads. By public transport, it can be reached by transferring to a bus from Shinshimashima Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line, but services are limited, so check the timetable in advance. The spa town has a public open-air bath where day-use bathing is available during the day for an adult fee in the several-hundred-yen range. The water contains bicarbonate and is marked by turning milky white on contact with the air. As the public open-air bath and some inns close in winter, it is reassuring to check the operating status for the time of your visit.

Practical Travel Notes

Shirahone Onsens greatest charm is its milky-white water, best enjoyed together with the open-air baths along the mountain stream. For a day trip you can use the public open-air bath or inns that allow day-use bathing, and many visitors tour it in a day along with Kamikochi and the Norikura highlands. The recommended season runs from the fresh greenery of early summer to the crimson leaves of autumn, while in winter some facilities close and the roads grow deep with snow, so care is needed. Nearby are real spots such as Kamikochi, the Norikura highlands, and the neighboring gorge. A day-use bath costs from a few hundred yen, and staying overnight lets you spend a quiet night in the mountains.

A Quick Tip

Because it lies in the mountains, temperatures are low and some sections of road are narrow. If you drive, plan with extra time and bring warm clothing. Since some facilities close in winter, it is reassuring to confirm the operating period and road conditions in advance.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Spring quality and benefits: A sulphur-bearing calcium and magnesium bicarbonate spring (hydrogen sulphide type). The notice at Awa no Yu lists cuts, burns, chronic skin conditions, chronic gynaecological complaints, diabetes, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, sensitivity to cold and recovery from fatigue among its benefits
• How the water is handled and source temperature: Almost all of the springs at Shirahone flow up naturally, and the water is used free-flowing straight from the source. Awa no Yu uses the "Shin-Awa no Yu source", which produces 1,730 litres per minute at a pH of 6.3 and 37.3 degrees Celsius at the point it emerges; because it is lukewarm, part of it is heated. A sulphur spring of around 38 degrees Celsius containing carbon dioxide gas is rare, and since raising the temperature above 40 degrees Celsius would cause the gas to separate out, the policy is deliberately not to heat it further
• Opening hours of the public open-air bath: These are free-flowing open-air baths, separate for men and women. Open 10:00-16:00 on weekdays and 9:00-17:00 at weekends and on public holidays, closed on Thursdays (changed from Tuesdays in November 2023). Admission is 700 yen for adults and 400 yen for children of elementary school age and under, revised in April 2025. The baths close for the winter from late November to late April, and in fiscal 2026 they opened on 25 April
• Day-use bathing at Awa no Yu: You can use the large bathhouse in the main building and the large mixed-gender open-air bath. Hours are 10:30-13:30 (leaving by 14:00), with admission at 1,000 yen for adults (junior high school age and above) and 600 yen for children aged 3 to elementary school age. Closing days are published on the opening calendar on the official website. The inn may close at short notice depending on boiler fuel supplies, so it is essential to telephone and check on the day
• Open-air baths: The large open-air bath at Awa no Yu is mixed-gender, but the entrances are separate for men and women, and because the water is cloudy and opaque it is easy for women to use as well. There are also indoor and open-air baths separated by gender. Day visitors are not lent bathing garments free of charge, so you use a bath towel you pay for or one you have brought yourself
• Towels and supplies: Awa no Yu sells towels for 200 yen, bath towels for 800 yen, shower caps for 100 yen and razors for 200 yen (all tax included). Gold, silver and platinum accessories can be discoloured by the minerals in the water, so take them off before bathing
• Drinking the water: The Awa no Yu source can be drunk and has a slightly sour taste. You can also enjoy the flavour of the spring water in the local speciality "onsen-gayu" rice porridge served at breakfast. There are two drinking fountains in the village
• How long to allow and avoiding the crowds: 1 to 2 hours if you only bathe. The day-use reception at Awa no Yu is only three hours long, and at busy times entry may be limited or reception may close early, so it is safest to arrive right at the start
• Parking and access: For the public open-air bath, use the free public car park. By car it is about 50 minutes from Matsumoto IC on the Nagano Expressway. By public transport it is about 60 minutes by bus from Shin-Shimashima Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line, getting off at the Shirahone Onsen bus stop right by the baths
• Road conditions in winter: Prefectural Route 300, the Shirahone Onsen Line, opened on 1 December 2012, making it possible to drive in all year round. However, Awa no Yu warns that for two-wheel-drive vehicles studless tyres alone are dangerous and chains are needed, and that even four-wheel-drive vehicles can slip
• What to bring and payment: There are few shops in this mountain valley, so it is wise to bring cash, a towel and a change of clothes. Policies on tattoos differ from facility to facility, so check with each one before you use it
