Unzen Jigoku โ€” The Powerful Energy of the Earth Rising from Volcanic Hell

On the Shimabara Peninsula of Nagasaki Prefecture, the earth is alive and fuming. Unzen Jigoku โ€” "Unzen Hell" โ€” is a sprawling field of boiling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and sulfurous springs that has been recognized as a sacred and powerful place for over 1,300 years. Japan's first national park designation (1934) included Unzen, testament to its unique natural drama.

Highlights

The Jigoku (Hell) area near Unzen Onsen town comprises over 30 named hot spring vents, each with its own character. Some bubble with gray mud, others spray jets of steam, and several pools shimmer in mineral-tinted turquoise and orange. The smell of sulfur is ever-present but becomes strangely invigorating after a few minutes. Wooden boardwalks wind between the vents at close range, allowing visitors to feel the heat radiating from the earth. The area has a dark history: during the Christian persecution of the 1620s, believers were executed by being thrown into these boiling springs โ€” a somber footnote displayed in signage along the path. The surrounding highlands of the Unzen-Amakusa National Park offer hiking trails through beech and bamboo forests, with views of Shimabara Bay and the distant Aso volcano range.

Getting There & Tips

From Nagasaki Station, take the Shimabara Railway bus or Shimabara Express bus to Unzen (about 1.5 hours). From Kumamoto, ferries cross Shimabara Bay to Shimabara Port, then bus to Unzen. The Jigoku area is free to walk. Onsen bathing in nearby ryokan uses the same volcanic water. Bring a handkerchief if sulfur sensitivity is a concern.

Best Time to Visit

Azalea season (May) blankets the surrounding hills in pink and red above the smoking vents โ€” a dramatic contrast. Autumn foliage (Octoberโ€“November) is equally striking. The highlands above Unzen receive snow in winter, creating a surreal snowfield-over-steam landscape unique to this part of Japan.
