Shitennoji Temple โ€” The Oldest Government Temple in Japan

Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, Shitennoji in central Osaka holds the distinction of being the oldest officially established Buddhist temple in Japan. Built to fulfil a vow made during a battle, it represents the moment when Buddhism became not just a private practice but a state institution in Japan. Fourteen centuries later, Shitennoji remains a living temple โ€” its precincts filled daily with worshippers, its festivals drawing tens of thousands, and its ancient architectural layout preserved in a form that archaeologists believe closely resembles the original.

Highlights

The central temple complex follows a strict axial plan โ€” south gate, middle gate, five-storey pagoda, main hall, and lecture hall arranged in a straight north-south line โ€” a layout said to have been directly inspired by Korean temple architecture of the period. The current buildings are modern reconstructions in reinforced concrete, but they adhere faithfully to the ancient design and maintain the symbolic relationships between structures.

The Garan precinct's open courtyard, framed by these reconstructed halls, has a clarity and spaciousness that many older, more cluttered temple complexes lack. The five-storey pagoda is the visual focal point and one of the defining images of Osaka's historical townscape.

The Gokuraku-jodo Garden, a paradise garden attached to the temple and open for a fee, is a rare surviving example of a Heian-period landscape garden representing the Pure Land of Amida Buddha. Particularly beautiful in spring.

The Shotoku Taishi Ennichi fair, held monthly on the 21st and 22nd, is one of Osaka's great traditional markets, filling the precincts with antique dealers, food stalls, and a festive atmosphere rooted in centuries of commercial tradition.

Getting There & Tips

From Tennoji Station (JR, Osaka Metro), walk about 5 minutes west to the temple. The outer precincts are free; the inner Garan and garden charge admission. Visit on the 21st or 22nd for the monthly market. Temple opens at 8:30am.

Best Time to Visit

Spring cherry blossoms in the surrounding Tennoji Park area complement a temple visit. The monthly markets are worth planning around. Autumn evenings during the Shitennoji Wasso festival recreate the ancient Asuka period with costumed processions.
