Nakanoshima and Osaka Castle Park β Where History Meets Modern Osaka
Osaka wears its history lightly but wears it everywhere. In the island district of Nakanoshima, where Meiji-era Western-style buildings line a riverside park between two branches of the Dojima River, and in the vast green expanse of Osaka Castle Park where the great 16th-century castle keep rises above the modern city, two of the city's most compelling public spaces invite visitors to discover an Osaka beyond the neon and the takoyaki stalls.
Highlights
Nakanoshima is a slender island in the heart of Osaka's city centre, connected to the surrounding city by a series of decorative bridges. The Osaka City Central Public Hall, built in 1918 in a neo-Renaissance style with a copper dome, and the Bank of Japan Osaka Branch, a neoclassical masterwork from 1903, anchor the island's western end and reflect the ambition of Meiji-era Osaka as Japan's commercial capital. The Nakanoshima Rose Garden, blooming in May and October, adds a surprisingly romantic note to the urban landscape.
Osaka Castle, originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 as a symbol of his unification of Japan, is the city's defining historical landmark. The current castle tower, rebuilt in 1931 and renovated in 1997, houses a well-curated museum tracing the castle's history and the life of Hideyoshi. The surrounding park β particularly the inner and second bailey moats with their enormous stone walls β gives a powerful impression of the original fortification's scale.
Castle Park's plum grove (late February) and cherry blossoms (late March) are among Osaka's most popular seasonal events. The park's size β over 100 hectares β means there is always a quiet corner to find even during peak periods.
Getting There & Tips
Nakanoshima is served by the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line (Higobashi Station). Osaka Castle is most easily reached from Osakajokoen Station on the JR Osaka Loop Line. The castle tower charges admission; the park is free. Allow half a day to combine both destinations.
Best Time to Visit
Late March to early April for castle park cherry blossoms. Late February for plum blossoms. October for Nakanoshima's second rose bloom. The castle park is pleasant for walking year-round.
