This city has magnificent scenery that even locals from Osaka visit every year.

The usual viewing season is from mid-October to early December. The coloring begins in order from the high-altitude areas, and the way the autumn foliage front slowly descends to the lowlands is just like a grand relay painted by nature. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city, your heart too will surely be captivated by "another face" of Osaka dyed in autumn colors.

Minoo Otaki

When it comes to autumn foliage spots in Osaka, the first name to come up is Minoo Otaki. The sight of the powerful waterfall with a 33-meter drop wrapped in burning red and orange maples brings surprise and emotion enough that you involuntarily exclaim, "Was there such a place in Osaka?" Near the basin of the falls, the reflection of the autumn leaves swaying on the water surface creates a fantastical world, and you'll keep pressing the shutter, thinking "one more, one more," with each shot. The moment when the power of the waterfall itself and the gloss of the autumn leaves overlap is a one-and-only magnificent view you can only encounter here.

The roughly 2.7-kilometer promenade leading to the falls is itself a continuous series of awe. The colored maples drape overhead as if drawing an arch, giving an immersive feeling as if walking through a brocade-colored tunnel. The sound of leaves swaying in the autumn wind, the murmur of the clear stream, the chirping of birds — this walking path, where you can taste autumn with all five senses, makes the very road toward the falls a delight of the journey.

At the shops lining the way, by all means try the fried maple leaves of Minoo's waterfall road, famous as an Osaka souvenir too. Inside the crisp, light-textured batter, a chewy maple leaf — its fragrant sweetness is especially delicious in the clear autumn air, and it blows away the fatigue of the stroll. Proceeding leisurely while eating as you walk — that's the local way to enjoy it.

A hidden gem point known only to local kids is near Ichi-no-Hashi (First Bridge), which spans just before the falls. Many tourists aim only for the falls and pass right by, but the autumn foliage of the ravine viewed while standing still on the bridge is so beautiful you'll find yourself standing transfixed. The panorama of the entire valley dyed red and yellow is excellent for photos too, and you can capture a shot that gathers "likes" on social media. By all means, stop your feet.

Best Season / Recommended Time Slot

The peak of the viewing season is usually mid- to late November. If you arrive before 9 a.m., the crowds are still few, and you can spend a luxurious time having the autumn foliage almost all to yourself in the clear morning air. On the other hand, in the afternoon, the angle of the dappled sunlight changes, and the falls receiving backlight shine golden, showing an expression completely different from the morning. Being able to savor two different emotions, morning and afternoon, is also one of Minoo Otaki's charms.

Access

About a 40-minute walk from "Minoo Station" on the Hankyu Minoo Line (walking the promenade to the falls). With good access of about 30 minutes by Hankyu train from the terminal Umeda Station, you can enjoy it sufficiently even on a day trip. Since the promenade is extremely crowded on autumn foliage season weekends, aiming for a weekday morning is the wise choice. There are coin lockers installed around Minoo Station, so deposit large luggage here and set off light. The promenade is paved but has undulations, so sneakers or comfortable walking shoes are essential. Since the temperature difference is also large in the autumn foliage season, don't forget to bring one layer you can put on and take off.

Katsuoji Temple

Katsuoji Temple, a power spot known nationwide for its "victory daruma." It is an ancient temple that many worshippers visit regularly, but in autumn its expression dramatically transforms. The maples filling the grounds color all at once as if burning, and the harmony with the vermilion-dyed approach and the dignified Tahoto pagoda creates a fantastical landscape as if witnessing a picture of the Pure Land. Furthermore, the contrast of the white daruma dedicated in rows here and there in the grounds with the vivid autumn leaves is a one-and-only beauty seen only at Katsuoji. Even touring autumn foliage spots all over Japan, you can't help but think of this sight, "This place alone is in a class of its own."

The way to enjoy Katsuoji is not limited to the grounds. On the hiking course of the surrounding Gein / Katsuoji-ji Park, you can walk leisurely while gazing at the colored mountain ridgelines, refreshing both heart and body. When you stand at the observation deck set up along the course, a grand panorama awaits where the brocade-colored mountain ranges spread across your entire field of vision and the cityscape of Osaka can be seen hazily in the distance. It's a magnificent viewpoint known to those in the know, so much so that local hikers unanimously say, "I like it here in the autumn foliage season the most." Savor the magnificent scale unique to a mountainous area, which is a little different from Minoo.

Furthermore, depending on the year, a nighttime light-up event may be held. The vermilion autumn leaves and the temple's halls illuminated in the dark night have an ethereal, mysterious beauty completely different from the daytime splendor, a sight you can't forget once you've seen it. Since the year held and the period held differ by year, be sure to check the latest information on the official website before making plans.

Best Season / Recommended Time Slot

The viewing season is usually mid- to late November. Early morning right after the gates open is especially recommended, and the sight of morning mist drifting in the grounds with still few worshippers and the autumn leaves dimly emerging fantastically is truly a world of painting. That stillness and mysterious atmosphere bring a special experience completely different from the daytime liveliness. It's well worth waking up early to visit.

Access

About 22 minutes by Hankyu Bus [Route 30] from "Minoo Kayano Station" on the Kita-Osaka Kyuko / Osaka Monorail (adult one-way fare: 800 yen), get off right at the "Katsuoji" bus stop. By car, about 26 minutes from Suita IC or about 21 minutes from Minoo Todoromi IC is the guide. On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and certain dates such as New Year, the private-car parking lot operates on a full reservation system (1,000 yen for 2 hours); cars without reservations cannot enter and no queuing is allowed. Using public transportation is strongly recommended. Using public transportation is by far recommended. Because an entry fee is required, having small change ready in advance makes it smooth. If you walk the hiking course, please visit in easy-to-move clothing and comfortable shoes.

Osaka Castle Park

"Huh, can you even enjoy autumn foliage at Osaka Castle?" — many are surely surprised like this. In fact, Osaka Castle Park is an unknown famous spot for autumn foliage that locals from Osaka have loved for many years. Compared with Minoo and Katsuoji, the crowding of tourists is relatively low, and the greatest charm is being able to leisurely savor the autumn atmosphere in a spacious space. The "competition of history and nature" woven by the castle keep with maples and ginkgos is a magnificent view seen only in Osaka, and recently it has gradually grown in popularity among overseas tourists too.

What I especially want to recommend is the Nishinomaru Garden area. In spring it's famous as a sacred place for flower viewing colored by about 600 cherry trees, but in autumn it transforms into a different world where the ginkgos shine golden. The scenery of the golden ginkgo rows fluttering against the backdrop of stone walls and the magnificent castle keep is so beautiful you'll find yourself stopping in your tracks. You'll be moved anew, thinking, "Even though it's the same place, can it show such different faces depending on the season?"

Also, at the Momiji Garden within the park, a rich variety of maples color in red, orange, and yellow as if competing, splendid as if you've wandered into the world of a brocade picture. Especially the time slot when the morning light streams in is exceptional, when the translucent leaves receive sunlight and shine like rubies and topazes — a golden time irresistible for photo lovers. Whether wide-angle or close-up, it makes a picture wherever you point your camera — that's the underlying strength of Osaka Castle Park's autumn foliage.

As a way to enjoy it unique to locals, the thing I want you to try by all means is a picnic while gazing at the autumn foliage. Sit down on a bench in the park, and spread out your favorite meal taken out from a nearby convenience store or restaurant. Above your head are the colored trees, and before your eyes is Osaka Castle — this luxurious moment a little removed from daily life is an adult way to spend autumn, a little different from a trip touring tourist spots.

Best Season / Recommended Time Slot

The ginkgos' viewing season is mid- to late November, and the maples' is late November to early December, reaching their viewing season relatively late among Osaka's autumn foliage spots. Visiting after enjoying the autumn foliage of Minoo and Katsuoji is recommended, as you can chase the autumn foliage front seamlessly in a single trip. Right after the early-morning opening, the crowds are sparse, an excellent chance to have the castle keep and autumn leaves almost all to yourself. The morning time slot when the light streams in softly also makes the finished photos far more beautiful.

Access

About a 10- to 15-minute walk from "Tanimachi 4-chome Station" or "Temmabashi Station" on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. It's also within walking distance of "Morinomiya Station" and "Osakajokoen Station" on the JR Osaka Loop Line, and the excellent convenience of access from multiple lines is a happy point. Because the park is extremely vast, we strongly recommend visiting in comfortable shoes. Also, using a rental cycle to ride leisurely through the grounds is a style favored by locals. The exhilaration of dashing through the autumn foliage while cutting the wind is a pleasantness different from walking. Since an entry fee may be required for Nishinomaru Garden, having small change ready is reassuring.

The Viewing Season and How to Enjoy the Autumn Foliage

Osaka's autumn foliage can be enjoyed in various places usually from mid-October to early December, relaying area by area. The high-altitude Minoo and Katsuoji areas begin coloring first, and eventually the autumn foliage front descends to Osaka Castle Park in the lowlands. If you make good use of this natural rhythm, you can efficiently tour "magnificent scenes at their viewing peak" in a single trip.

It's entirely possible to tour all three spots in the same weekend, but if you want to thoroughly savor each scenery, organizing a 1- to 2-night itinerary is recommended. Rather than moving around in a rush, the time to settle down slowly in one place and savor the air and changes of light there is the very delight of an autumn trip.

If you want to avoid the crowds, a weekday morning is the iron rule. Also, if you aim for a clear day after rain, the moist, wet leaves receive sunlight and shine like jewels, and you can encounter an exceptional beauty that can't be savored on clear days alone. Check the weather forecast frequently so as not to miss the timing.

As a packing checklist, be sure to prepare a camera, smartphone (fully charged), cold-weather gear, comfortable shoes, and drinks. Since it's a season when the morning and evening chill grows stronger, clothing you can layer is ideal. By all means, receive the magnificent autumn scenery of Osaka with your whole body. You'll surely want to visit again next year too.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Minoh: No motorcycles allowed. Cars cannot enter the Takimichi trail road either

The first thing to know about Minoh Park is the year-round road restrictions. On Minoh Drive Way (Prefectural Road 43), motorcycles are prohibited at all times, and all vehicles except taxis are prohibited between 22:00 and 5:00. Additionally, on the Takimichi (waterfall path) of the Osaka Prefectural Minoh Park, all vehicles including bicycles and motorcycles are prohibited unless authorised (Minoh City).

During the foliage season, a one-way traffic restriction is added on top of these.

A Minoh City document addressed to neighbourhood associations states "we will implement one-way restrictions as in previous years", confirming that this is an annual measure. The start date shifts from year to year.

The correct car park to use is the one near Minoh Station. Minoh City explicitly states of the Otaki-ue Car Park: "capacity is limited, and it is extremely difficult to use it. Please use the municipal car park near Minoh Station wherever possible," and reservations are not accepted.

Only No. 1 rises to ¥2,000 during the festival period, while No. 2 stays at ¥1,000 — this discrepancy comes from the same Minoh City webpage. Parking in No. 2 works out cheaper.

Illumination has taken place over multiple years. In 2024 it ran 9 November – 1 December; in 2025, 15 November – 7 December — in both cases every night during the period, from sunset to 21:30. The illumination covers the Takimichi path, Ryuanji Temple, and Nishieji Temple. However, the official announcement clearly states: "Illumination will be cancelled if a storm warning or landslide risk warning is issued for Minoh City, or if the Minoh River is in severe flood."

Walking distance: From Hankyu Minoh Station to Minoh Otaki (the Great Falls), approx. 2.7 km, 40–50 minutes on foot. The Takimichi is paved and has no kerbs, making it accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but there is one steep section along the way. From the Otaki-ue Car Park to the falls is about 15 minutes; the official website cautions that this route includes a steep incline that is dangerous for wheelchair users.

Autumn 2026 note: A sabo dam construction project (15 October 2025 – end of September 2027, as planned) and tree-thinning work in the Minoh National Forest (late August 2026 – 26 February 2027, as planned) mean that part of the nature trail is closed. Open fires, barbecues, and drones are prohibited throughout the park; the entire area is non-smoking. Minoh City has also issued a bear alert.

Katsuoji Temple: Car park is "fully reservation-based" on weekends and public holidays

The private car park at Katsuoji Temple operates on a fully reservation-based system on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and certain designated days such as New Year (a system introduced as a pilot in 2024). The wording on the official website is emphatic, so we quote it directly:

Vehicles without a reservation cannot park / Queuing to enter is not permitted / Even on weekdays, queuing at the Katsuoji car park is not permitted when it is full

Reservations can be made via the official website for same day up to 14 days ahead. There is no reservation fee; the parking charge (¥1,000 for 2 hours) is paid on site. This is not a place where arriving early guarantees a spot.

The temple entry donation (nyuzan shinoryo) is ¥500 for adults (senior high school and over), ¥400 for primary and middle school pupils, ¥100 for pre-school children, and free for children aged 2 and under. An online entry ticket (Web nyuzan-ken) is available to avoid queuing.

Illumination: In 2024 it was held on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 9 November to 1 December; in 2025 it was held as "Kinshu no Yoimairi 2025" on weekends and public holidays only from 1–30 November. The dates vary significantly from year to year, so be sure to check that year's announcement. There is no separate illumination fee; the standard entry donation applies and visiting hours are simply extended.

The bus is Hankyu Bus [30] (Minoh Kayano Station – Katsuoji Temple). Journey time from Minoh Kayano Station is 22 minutes, ¥800 per adult one way.

Note: The "Autumn" page on the Katsuoji Temple official website still contains a mix of 2023 and 2024 information. Do not take dates at face value — always check that year's announcement.

Osaka Castle Park: No official information as a foliage spot

To be straightforward: the "Seasonal Flower Calendar" on the Osaka Castle Park official website lists only three items for autumn — fragrant olive (kinmokusei), white fragrant olive (ginmokusei), and October cherry (jugatsuzakura) — with no mention of Japanese maple (momiji), ginkgo (icho), or zelkova (keyaki). The park does not officially announce a foliage peak season.

The most useful reference point is data from the Osaka District Meteorological Observatory, located immediately to the west of the park. The average date for ginkgo yellowing is 22 November, and for maple reddening it is 1 December (though these are records from specimen trees within the observatory grounds and are separate from the park's peak season).

Osaka Castle Tower is open 9:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), with admission of ¥1,200 for adults, ¥600 for university and senior high school students, and free for middle school and below (revised 1 April 2025). The official statement notes: "Taking the last entry time into account, we may impose restrictions on the ticket purchase queue before 17:30 depending on conditions." Going at the last minute may mean you cannot get in.

The car parks are: 171 spaces near Osaka-jo Park Station, and 143 spaces near Morinomiya Station. Weekdays 8:00–22:00 are ¥400 per hour; weekends and public holidays are ¥500 per hour.

Checklist Before You Go
