A Treasure of Osaka's Nature

Minoo Falls (Minoo Otaki) is a 33-meter waterfall in Meiji no Mori Minoo Quasi-National Park, selected as one of Japan's 100 finest waterfalls. About 30 minutes by train from central Osaka yet wrapped in rich nature, it is a popular spot for valley scenery. The "Taki-michi" waterfall path runs about 2.7 km from Hankyu Minoo Station to the falls, roughly a 40 to 45 minute walk, making for a pleasant stroll to the sound of the flowing stream.

A Leading Autumn Foliage Spot

From November the trees along the valley begin to color, and especially from late October to mid-November the whole area turns brilliant red, orange, and yellow. The scene of the falls and maples together is superb, and "Minoo momiji" has long been beloved as a representative Osaka autumn tradition. The path to the falls, passing through a tunnel of autumn leaves, bustles with people during the season.

The Specialty "Momiji Tempura"

Minoo's specialty "momiji tempura" is an unusual sweet made by salting edible maple leaves for a year, then coating them in sweet batter and deep-frying. The crisp texture and gentle sweetness make it a fun and unique Minoo souvenir and food-walking treat, served fresh at shops along the waterfall path.

Katsuoji, the Temple of Victory

Deep in Minoo lies Katsuoji Temple, an old temple famous for its "winning daruma." The sight of countless daruma dolls dedicated by people whose wishes came true is striking. It is known for blessings of victory in contests, exams, and recovery from illness, and is a popular Osaka spot. It is some distance from the falls, so access by car or bus is convenient.

The waterfall path to Minoo Falls is largely paved and easy to walk, but at about 2.7 km one way it is a fair distance, so wear comfortable shoes. Weekends during the autumn foliage season are very crowded, filling the station and the area around the falls, so an early visit is recommended. Wild Japanese macaques sometimes appear, and the trick to enjoying the walk safely is not to show food or carry it in your hand. Since Katsuoji is away from the falls, visiting it together is easiest by car or bus.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn foliage peaks from mid to late November. Early summer with its fresh greenery, and midsummer when the spray of the falls is cool, are also comfortable. About 30 minutes by train from central Osaka, Minoo lets you easily enjoy nature that feels far from the city. Depending on whether you add the round trip to the falls with food-walking, or extend to Katsuoji, you can build a half-day to full-day plan.
