Chichibu Shrine and Its Seven Mysteries

Chichibu Shrine stands in the center of Chichibu City in Saitama as the guardian shrine of the Chichibu region, an ancient shrine said to preserve about 2,000 years of history and one of the Kanto region most venerable. As the general shrine of the old Chichibu Province it has long gathered deep faith, and it is counted among the Three Shrines of Chichibu alongside Mitsumine Shrine and Hodosan Shrine. The Principal Shrine of Chichibu

The present halls are said to have been rebuilt by Tokugawa Ieyasu after being lost to fire during the Warring States period, and they feature the ornate gongen style of architecture. The carvings that adorn the halls all show fine craftsmanship, and among them the Binding Dragon and the tiger of child blessing and child rearing, both attributed to the master carver Hidari Jingoro, are famed as masterpieces that captivate visitors. A legend tells that when a dragon living in the nearby Amagaike Pond ran wild, a puddle would form beneath the carving, so it was bound with a chain, after which the dragon no longer appeared.

The halls of Chichibu Shrine bear many carvings imbued with lessons and wishes, each with an intriguing tale. The Three Vigorous Monkeys, who see, hear, and speak well, are popular as a contrast to the three monkeys of Nikko Toshogu. Chichibu Shrine can be visited all year, but the period of its grand festival, the Chichibu Night Festival held on December 2 and 3, is especially famous. Counted among Japan's three great float festivals and designated an important intangible folk cultural property of the nation, it fills the town as gorgeous kasaboko floats and stalls are paraded, together with fireworks that color the winter night sky. For access it is very convenient, about a 3 minute walk from Chichibu Station on the Chichibu Railway, about a 3 minute walk from Ohanabatake Station, and about a 10 minute walk from Seibu Chichibu Station. • Opening hours guide: the shrine gate is generally open from early morning until night, with opening times that shift by season. To study the carvings closely, daytime with good light is best

• Nearby spots: within walking distance are Chichibu Imamiya Shrine and the Chichibu Matsuri Kaikan, and a little farther lie Nagatoro, Mount Buko, and Mitsumine Shrine. Local dishes such as Chichibu soba and miso potato are a pleasure along the way
• Budget: worship is free, and even with a goshuin and amulet you can bring home a memento for the low thousands of yen
