Ogoto Onsen

Spreading along the western shore of Lake Biwa at the foot of Mount Hiei, Ogoto Onsen is the largest hot spring resort in Shiga, said to have been discovered about 1,200 years ago by Saicho, founder of the Enryakuji temple.

The water is a highly alkaline simple spring with a pH of 9.0, so gentle that it leaves the skin smooth and soft, earning it the nickname the water of beautiful skin. The clear, faintly silky bath is a delight, and many inns offer open-air baths with lake views.

Access and Basic Information

From Ogoto Onsen Station on the JR Kosei Line, the inns are just a few minutes by shuttle or taxi. Kyoto Station is under an hour away, making it an easy trip.
