Nagahama Taiko Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

Springing up right beside Nagahama Castle on the northeast side of Lake Biwa, Nagahama Taiko Onsen is a relatively new spring uncovered near the castle ruins in 1983. Closely linked to the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it is also known as the water of children. Its charm is enjoying the mood of the castle town and the lake view at once.

Access and Basic Information

About a ten-minute walk from JR Nagahama Station, it is easy to reach by train. From the Nagahama exit of the Hokuriku Expressway it is about 12 minutes by car. It pairs well with a stroll through the old castle town and the Kurokabe Square district. From Nagahama Station, rapid trains run directly toward Kyoto and Osaka, making it a convenient base for exploring the northern lakeshore.

Practical Travel Notes

After bathing, a walk to Kurokabe Square, about five minutes from the station, is recommended. It is the northern lakeshore's leading sightseeing area, drawing some two million visitors a year, with glass workshops, cafes, and the Hikiyama Festival Museum. From Hokoen Park by the castle to Kurokabe Square is within walking distance, and half a day is enough to see the main sights. Chikubu Island on Lake Biwa is about 35 minutes by boat from Nagahama Port. Budget around three thousand yen for a bath, a meal, and a stroll. In cherry-blossom season it grows crowded, so an early start is more comfortable.

A Quick Tip

After bathing, head to the atmospheric Kurokabe Square to browse glass workshops and cozy cafes. If you have time, take the boat from Nagahama Port to Chikubu Island to visit the sacred isle on the lake.

• Spring quality: Iron-bearing spring. Nagahama City's guidance describes it as an iron spring welling up at the site of Nagahama Castle, with brownish water. Because the color changes on contact with the air, the depth of color varies from day to day
• Indications: The general indications listed by the Japan Spa Association include chronic pain in the muscles and joints, sensitivity to cold, weakened gastrointestinal function, mild high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance, asthma and recovery from fatigue
• Day-use bathing (Hamakogetsu): 11:00-14:30 and 15:00-20:00
• Day-use bathing fees (Hamakogetsu): 1,500 yen for adults (including bathing tax), 750 yen for children (elementary school students) and 500 yen for infants (age 1 to preschool). All include a bath towel and a face towel
• A note for busy times: The large communal bath gives priority to overnight guests, so when the inn is busy with them, day visitors may be turned away
• Private bath (Hamakogetsu): 11:00-20:00, reservation required in advance. Both indoor and outdoor baths can be used; the private hire charge is 1,500 yen for 50 minutes, on top of which the bathing fee is charged for each person. It is not on the Lake Biwa side, so there is no view
• Open-air bath: Hamakogetsu has an open-air bath made of Shigaraki ceramic ware. You can watch the sunset over Lake Biwa
• Children: In the large communal bath at Hamakogetsu, mixed bathing with children is allowed up to the age of 6 in line with the hygiene management guidelines
• Tattoos: The large communal bath at Hamakogetsu does not admit bathers with tattoos. At Grand Mercure Lake Biwa Resort & Spa you may bathe if you cover them with the cover stickers on sale there (8 cm x 10 cm, 2 sheets)
• The large communal bath at Grand Mercure Lake Biwa Resort & Spa: 6:00-10:00 (last reception 9:30) and 15:00-23:00 (last reception 22:30). It has an open-air bath, a spacious indoor bath and a sauna, and the Onsen Lounge is open 15:00-23:00. Whether day-use bathing is possible must be checked in advance

• Pick-up service: Hamakogetsu provides a free shuttle bus from JR Nagahama Station for guests staying or dining there only. You call the inn after you arrive
• Facilities inside (Hamakogetsu): The teppanyaki dining room "Sazanami", the dining room and tea room "Jijian", the souvenir shop "Hokkoku Kaido", and "Ryukusu", a beauty treatment room centered on oil massage. The banquet hall holds up to about 60 people
• The surrounding area: It is about 90 meters to the Nagahama Castle History Museum and about 180 meters to Hokoen Park. There is also a good spot for watching the sunset about 85 meters to the west
