Nihondaira: Mt. Fuji & Suruga Bay Views

From the summit of Nihondaira, the famous scenery of Shizuoka unfolds in every direction, from Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay to Miho no Matsubara and the Southern Alps. This nationally designated scenic hill is home to the Nihondaira Yume Terrace, an observatory involving architect Kengo Kuma, offering a 360-degree panorama. It is also the starting point of the ropeway to Kunozan Toshogu.

Landscape of Nihondaira

Nihondaira is a hill of about 300 meters straddling Shimizu Ward and Suruga Ward in Shizuoka City. Said to take its name from a legend of Yamato Takeru, it is one of the region finest viewpoints, taking in Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and Miho no Matsubara. Gentle slopes covered in tea fields add to its distinctly Shizuoka character.

Yume Terrace and Kunozan Toshogu

The Nihondaira Yume Terrace at the summit is a wood-rich observatory that opened in 2018, with architect Kengo Kuma involved in its design. Its circular viewing corridor offers unhurried views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay. From here, a ropeway reaches Kunozan Toshogu, which enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its ornate main hall is designated a national treasure and draws many worshippers who combine the visit with the scenery.

Access and Basic Information

From JR Shizuoka Station, take a Shizutetsu Just Line Nihondaira bus to the last stop, Nihondaira Ropeway. Buses also run from JR Higashi-Shizuoka Station. By car, head toward the summit from the Shizuoka or Shimizu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway; parking is provided. Opening hours for the Yume Terrace and the operating hours and fares of the Nihondaira Ropeway may change, so check the respective official websites.

Practical Travel Notes

Part of the Yume Terrace viewing corridor is outdoors, so a jacket is welcome on windy days and in winter. Kunozan Toshogu is usually reached by ropeway from the summit, while a walking route with a long flight of stone steps climbs from the base; choose according to your time and stamina. Walking paths around the summit make it a good rest stop while sightseeing or driving. Combined with Miho no Matsubara and Shimizu Port, it forms a full-day route centered on Mt. Fuji views.

One Piece of Advice

For Mt. Fuji, an early morning with few clouds is best. As a popular facility, the Yume Terrace can be crowded on weekends. If you plan to combine the ropeway, a visit to the shrine, and the viewing corridor, allow a comfortable two to three hours. At the base, Nihondaira Zoo makes the area enjoyable for families as well.
