Mt. Fuji Climbing — The Challenge of Japan's Highest Peak
Climbing Mt. Fuji — Japan's highest mountain at 3,776 meters and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global renown — is one of Asia's most iconic outdoor experiences. Each summer, approximately 200,000 people make the ascent via one of four official trails, completing a physical and spiritual challenge that has defined Japanese mountain culture for centuries.
Highlights
The Yoshida Trail from the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station on Fuji's northern side is the most popular and best-serviced route, with mountain huts offering food, rest, and emergency shelter at intervals from the 7th Station upward. The trail's upper sections pass through raw volcanic landscape of increasing austerity — reddish-brown scoria, occasional snowfields, and the gradual thinning of air that makes the final push to the crater rim physically demanding regardless of fitness level.
The summit crater, nearly 200 meters deep and 500 meters across, is encircled by a series of volcanic peaks, the highest of which, Kengamine, is the actual summit. Crater circumnavigation (Ohachi-meguri) takes approximately one hour and passes the various subsidiary peaks and the weather observatory. The goraiko (sunrise) from the summit — witnessed from above the cloud layer with the sun emerging from the Pacific horizon — is among the most transcendent experiences Japan offers.
The descent on the Yoshida Trail uses a dedicated sand-and-scoria path (sunabashiri) that allows rapid progress by effectively surfing down the loose volcanic surface.
Getting There & Tips
Direct buses from Shinjuku and Kawaguchiko to Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station. Start no later than afternoon of the first day for overnight summit timing. Mountain sickness prevention: ascend slowly, hydrate well, rest frequently.
Best Time to Visit
Early July to early September for official season. August offers the warmest conditions at the summit. Climb on weekdays to avoid congestion on the trail.
