Rising along the west coast of Izu, Dogashima Onsen is famous as a scenic spot where intricately carved rocks and coves stretch one after another. Cliffs and caves shaped by waves and wind over ages dot the shore, and the beauty of the sun setting into the sea has earned it the name the Matsushima of Izu. Bathing while gazing at the water is a luxury unique to this place.

Highlights

The Tensodo cave, hollowed out by the waves, reveals a mysterious space where light pours through an opening in the ceiling when you enter by sightseeing boat. The cave-touring cruise takes about twenty minutes and brings the jagged rocks close from the water. Sanshiro Island, where a tombolo connects to land only at low tide, is another popular sight. Seaside paths and the hilltop Sawada Park let you enjoy the contrast of cliffs and blue sea.

Enjoying the Seasons

Beautiful sunsets are a draw all year, but the clear winter air paints the sea most vividly. Summer bustles with swimming and marine leisure, and fresh seafood can be enjoyed in every season.

Access and Basic Information

By public transport, the usual route is a bus toward the west coast from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway, and it is safest to allow roughly an hour and a half. By car, cross the Amagi heights from the Tomei Numazu Interchange to reach west Izu. The cave-touring cruise generally runs from about 10:00 to 16:00, with adult fares around 1,500 yen as a guide (please check the official site for the latest). The hilltop Sawada Park open-air bath, closed on Wednesdays, is a cherished bath overlooking the sea.

Practical Travel Notes

West Izu is not the easiest to reach, so a plan with time to spare is more comfortable. Buses from the Shuzenji direction are limited in number, so check the timetable in advance. If you are after the sunset, an overnight stay is recommended, letting you savor everything from the evening glow to the morning sea. Combining the cruise, the Sawada Park bath, and a walk along the paths fills a good half to full day. Budget-wise, the cruise runs in the thousand-yen range, and day-use bathing from a few hundred to around a thousand-plus yen. At sunset, the view from an inn open-air bath or terrace is exceptional.

A Quick Tip

The view from an inn open-air bath or terrace at sunset is exceptional. Sightseeing boats and the Sawada Park bath may be suspended depending on weather and sea conditions, so check in advance.
