Dogashima Onsen

Rising along the west coast of Izu, Dogashima Onsen is famous as a scenic spot where intricately carved rocks and coves stretch one after another. Cliffs and caves shaped by waves and wind over ages dot the shore, and the beauty of the sun setting into the sea has earned it the name the Matsushima of Izu. Bathing while gazing at the water is a luxury unique to this place.

Highlights

The Tensodo cave, hollowed out by the waves, reveals a mysterious space where light pours through an opening in the ceiling when you enter by sightseeing boat. Sanshiro Island, where a tombolo connects to land only at low tide, is another popular sight. Seaside walking paths bring the jagged rock formations close at hand.

Enjoying the Seasons

Beautiful sunsets are a draw all year, but the clear winter air paints the sea most vividly. Summer bustles with swimming and marine leisure, and fresh seafood can be enjoyed in every season.

Access and Basic Information

The usual route is a bus toward the west coast from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway. By car, cross the Amagi heights from the Tomei Numazu Interchange to reach west Izu. Many inns overlooking the sea are scattered here.

A Quick Tip

The view from an inn open-air bath or terrace at sunset is exceptional. Sightseeing boats may be suspended depending on the weather, so check in advance.
