Mibu Tochigi Wanpaku Park Tulip Festival

At "Tochigi Wanpaku Park" in Mibu Town, Tochigi Prefecture, about 10,000 tulips of some 20 varieties bloom in profusion every spring across 76 ares of flower beds centered on the "Yume Kadan" (Dream Flower Bed). The spectacle of colorful tulips planted in bands is spectacular, as if a rainbow carpet has been laid out. With the charm of the flower field and park facilities the whole family can enjoy all day, it is a spring outing spot representing Tochigi, bustling with many flower-viewers during the spring outing season.

The Spectacle of About 10,000 Tulips

The protagonists are, above all, the roughly 10,000 tulips of some 20 varieties. Alongside red, yellow, pink, white and purple, unusual varieties such as "Spring Green," "Ice Cream" and "Huis Ten Bosch" are lined up, and the whole flower field, planted in bands by color, draws out a richly colored pattern. If you stroll among the tulip fields continuing as far as the eye can see, your heart dances at the warm spring sunlight and the colors of the flowers. At the venue, flower-themed events and stalls also line up, with abundant photo spots. A gorgeous space spreads out where families and couples can fully enjoy the arrival of spring.

Wanpaku Park Where Children Can Have Fun

What you can enjoy together with the spectacle of tulips is "Tochigi Wanpaku Park." Within the spacious grounds are substantial large play equipment where children can move their bodies to their heart's content, a bouncy dome, and indoor play facilities, making it very popular with families with small children. You can leisurely enjoy a picnic on the lawn plaza or come into contact with seasonal nature, spending the whole day without growing bored. Combining flower appreciation and park play makes a spring outing the whole family can be satisfied with.

What Kind of Flower Bed Is the "Yume Kadan"?

The "Yume Kadan," the stage for the tulips, is the symbolic flower bed of Tochigi Wanpaku Park. According to the park's official website its area is about 7,640 square meters, and it is arranged so that many kinds of plants can be enjoyed through all four seasons of the year. It is managed together with the volunteer group "Yumesakibito," and the flowers replanted with each season are supported by the hands of local people. When the tulip season ends another set of plants takes the leading role, so being able to enjoy the colors of the flower bed outside spring as well is a strength of this park.

Plenty to Do Even in the Rain: The Park's Facilities

If you come only for the flowers your stay will be short, but combined with the park's facilities you can spend a whole day. The main facilities introduced on the official website include "Fushigi no Fune" (Ship of Wonders), which gathers "mysterious" phenomena that make use of scientific principles and human physiology; "Dai-Kyoryu Park," where 24 life-sized dinosaurs appear that move and roar; "Kodomo no Shiro," a glass-walled building with a slide shaped like the pink dinosaur Momo-chan and a sandpit; and "Panapana no Machi," where children can play at being police officers or go shopping, and can even do real shopping at the souvenir shop and penny-candy shop. There are also the "Adventure Lake and Canoe House," the "Tanuki no Meiro" maze of about 1,000 square meters on Midori no Oka, the "Wanpaku Train" that runs through the park on weekends and public holidays, and "Restaurant Hanamidori," which makes generous use of local farm produce. Because there are many indoor facilities, it is easy to make plans even in early spring when the weather is hard to predict.

Photography Tips

Since the tulips are planted in bands by color, rather than shooting the flower bed head-on, aiming diagonally along the line of the bands produces a pleasing line of color stretching into the distance. Lower your camera to the height of the flowers, focus on a single bloom in the foreground and blur the background, and the sweep of the flower field is strongly emphasized. With the light behind you the colors are vivid; against the light the petals turn translucent and appear to glow - the same flower bed gives a different impression depending on where you stand. Early in the morning, when the wind is light and the light is soft, there are also fewer people, which suits photography. As a basic rule, do not enter the flower beds; shoot from the paths.

Nearby Spots and Park Rules

Within the grounds is the "Mibu Town Toy Museum," which, according to its official website, stands just past the "Toy Museum Front Gate" from the "Niji no Hiroba" (Rainbow Plaza) of Tochigi Wanpaku Park. Opening hours are 9:30 to 16:30, and it is closed every Monday (the following day when Monday is a public holiday or substitute holiday) and over the New Year period, while in August it stays open without a break. A distinctive feature is that from "Mibu Highway Park / Michi-no-Eki Mibu (Mibu PA)" on the Kita-Kanto Expressway you can pass through the "Pippi to Piko no Mon" gate on foot without leaving the expressway and come and go through the park. Note that the park promotes a take-your-litter-home campaign, and bicycles may not be ridden inside the grounds. The official website asks that pets always be kept on a lead short enough to control them, and that they not be brought into the indoor facilities or Dai-Kyoryu Park.

Best Season and Access

The peak for tulips is typically mid-April (in 2026 the blooming was early, at its peak as of April 8 and lasting until around April 15). It is recommended to check the flowering status on the park's official website before visiting. For access, a car is convenient, and you can head there from the Kita-Kanto Expressway and the like. By public transportation, use a bus or taxi from a station on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line and the like. Since crowding is expected during the event period, visiting in the early morning hours is recommended. It is a spring-only outing spot where you can fully enjoy the spectacle of tulips spreading as far as the eye can see and the park play that delights children.

• Access by car: Mibu IC or Tsuga IC on the Kita-Kanto Expressway. It is a 2-minute walk from "Michi-no-Eki Mibu (Mibu Highway Park, Mibu PA)", and you can enter directly from the Highway Park entrance on the south side of the park (Pippi to Piko no Mon)
