A representative sight of Nasu is the sightseeing ranch, where in spacious pastures you can interact with cows, sheep, goats, and alpacas, and milking and butter-making experiences are popular. Soft-serve ice cream and cheese made from freshly drawn milk have an exceptional flavor.

There are different pleasures by season: summer for escaping the heat, October for viewing autumn colors, and winter for winter sports. Summer is several degrees cooler than central Tokyo, and many come as a retreat from the heat. In autumn the slopes of Mt. Nasu are dyed with foliage, a spectacular season when the whole highland takes on color. Raising your elevation easily by ropeway lets you enjoy a grand panorama of autumn colors. Winter brings clear air and snowy scenery, and skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed. • Getting there: by bus or car from Nasu-Shiobara Station on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen. Access is good, about an hour and a half from Tokyo by Shinkansen
• Elevation: the highland at the center of sightseeing is generally around 1,000 meters. Mt. Nasu (Chausu-dake) is an active volcano that is still active today
• Hot springs: there is the Nasu Onsen hot spring area, said to have opened more than 1,300 years ago, where distinctive springs such as the milky-white sulfur spring Shika-no-yu are dotted about

Practical Travel Notes

Because the sights of Nasu Highland are spread over a wide area, moving by car is convenient. By public transport, local buses are the basis, but services are limited on some sections, so check the timetable in advance. The highland cools considerably in the mornings and evenings, so preparing a jacket even in summer is reassuring. The ropeway to Mt. Nasu may be suspended in strong winds, and the weather near the summit changes suddenly, so take care with the weather and your equipment when hiking or walking. Popular sightseeing ranches and museums may change their operation by season and day of the week, so check facilities you are aiming for in advance. On foliage-season weekends, roads and parking are congested.
