Nasushiobara Onsen: A Treasury of Famous Hot Springs

Along the Hoki River in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, the Shiobara Onsen-kyo is a cluster of hot spring resorts scattered through a beautiful gorge. According to tradition the original Motoyu spring was discovered in the early Heian period, during the Daido era (806 to 810), giving the area more than a thousand years of history. From JR Nasushiobara Station or Nishinasuno Station, local buses reach the hot spring area in about forty minutes. By car, it is roughly thirty minutes from the Nishinasuno-Shiobara IC on the Tohoku Expressway via National Route 400. Because the resorts are spread along the river, it helps to check the location of your inn and the spots you wish to visit in advance.
