Asagaya Shinmeigu

A few minutes on foot from JR Asagaya Station, in a quiet residential area, lies the spacious grounds of Asagaya Shinmeigu. A venerable shrine enshrining Amaterasu Omikami, it has long been cherished by local residents. It is known for the rare blessing of warding off the eight kinds of misfortune, said to purify and dispel every sort of calamity. Its well-tended grounds and dignified halls make it a healing power spot that lets visitors forget the bustle of the city.

Spring brings cherry blossoms to the grounds, and autumn offers calm foliage. At the Shinmeigu Grand Festival in August, portable shrines parade through the town and the whole neighborhood comes alive together. Because the colors and patterns of the Kamimusubi amulet change with the seasons and events, there is also pleasure in returning at different times of year.
