Tottori Sand Dunes and Sand Museum Half Day Course

Wide skies, the open sea, and rolling hills of sand. This course links two of Tottoris signature sights into a compact half day. There is some walking, but a chairlift and free parking make it easy even for first time travelers.

Course Route

9:00 Start at the Sand Museum Arriving near opening time means smaller crowds and a relaxed viewing. The delicate sculptures, made only of sand and water, follow a new theme every year and their sheer scale is captivating.

10:00 Take the chairlift to the dunes Board the sightseeing chairlift in front of the museum and glide down toward the foot of the dunes, enjoying the scenery as you go.

10:20 Walk the Tottori Sand Dunes Climb the sand and aim for Umanose, a ridge about 47 meters high. The view of the Sea of Japan from the top is truly spectacular.

11:30 Rest at the dune rest house Enjoy the local pear soft serve and seafood while browsing for souvenirs.

Highlights

The Sand Museum is the worlds first museum built around sand sculptures. Themed on famous places and stories from around the world, the works astonish visitors with their craftsmanship. On the dunes, the sea view from Umanose is a favorite, and the wind ripple patterns in the sand are worth seeking out.

Access and Tips

From Tottori Station it is about 20 minutes by local bus to the Sand Museum stop. By car it is about 15 minutes from the Tottori interchange, and parking is free. Wear comfortable shoes for the dunes, and in summer bring a hat and water as the sun is strong.

A Quick Tip

Final entry to the Sand Museum is 30 minutes before closing. If you want a leisurely visit, come early in the morning to avoid the crowds and take your time.
