Shirabu Onsen: Hot Spring Guide & Visitor Access

Shirabu Onsen, welling up at about 900 meters on the slopes of the Azuma mountains in Yonezawa City, is a mountain hidden spring said to have opened in 1312. Legend holds that a samurai, Sato Munezumi, found a hawk healing its wounds in the water. Counted among the Three Takayu of Ou together with Takayu Onsen in Fukushima and Zao Onsen in Yamagata, it has been loved by therapeutic bathers as a quiet mountain spring. In the more than 400 years since its opening, it is a historic hot spring that has walked its path as a mountain healing spa.

Highlights

A specialty is the waterfall-like pounding bath, handed down at thatched-roof inns, that drops water from a high position. Nishiya Ryokan retains a thatched main house built in 1829, designated the first Important Landscape Structure of Yonezawa City. With abundant free-flowing spring water, you can enjoy the gentle bath. In 2000 a fire destroyed two nearby inns, but the thatched Nishiya Ryokan still conveys its bygone form, preserving the mood of a mountain healing spa.

Seasonal Highlights

Summer is cool, and it serves as a base for climbing and strolling via the ropeway to Tengendai Highland. Autumn brings the leaves of Azuma, and winter offers skiing and snow-viewing baths. Because of the high elevation it stays cool even in summer, making it well suited to a stay that doubles as an escape from the heat.

Access and Basic Information

From JR Yonezawa Station it is about 50 minutes by Sanko bus. The water is a chloride spring, with a temperature of about 60 degrees Celsius and a gentle feel on the skin. Colorless, transparent, and blessed with abundant flow, many inns practice free-flowing spring bathing. Besides the signature pounding bath, cuisine using Yonezawa beef and mountain herbs is another pleasure.

Practical Travel Notes

In the mountains the temperature drops easily, so it is reassuring to bring something to throw over your shoulders in any season. The ropeway to Tengendai Highland serves as a gateway to summer highland strolls, autumn leaves, and winter skiing, letting you fully enjoy nature from a base at Shirabu Onsen. Since buses are limited, check the timetable in advance. As a guide, an overnight combining the pounding bath and a highland stroll is ideal. Combining a bath at the signature thatched inn with a Yonezawa beef meal lets you fully savor the mood of a mountain spring. You can also enjoy the surrounding nature, such as a climb of Mount Nishi-Azuma and nearby Shintakayu Onsen.

In the mountains the temperature drops easily, so it is reassuring to bring something to throw over your shoulders in any season. The pounding bath has a strong force, so enjoy it against your shoulders or lower back within a comfortable range. In winter, prepare for snow and ice, keeping in mind good footwear and setting out early.
