Iizaka Onsen

North of Fukushima City, Iizaka Onsen is one of the venerable hot springs counted among the Three Famous Springs of Oshu, alongside Naruko and Akiu. Inns line the valley of the Surikami River, and steam drifts up from the narrow lanes throughout the town.

Highlights

Nine public bathhouses are scattered across the town, and buying a bathing pass to hop from one to the next is the classic way to enjoy the area. The wooden Saba-ko-yu is a beautiful building that preserves the mood of the Meiji era, and its hot waters ease the fatigue of travel.

Enjoying the Seasons

Summer brings the lively Iizaka fighting festival, while autumn colors the surrounding flowering-peach hills. In spring you can pick cherries at nearby orchards.

Access and Basic Information

From Fukushima Station, take the Fukushima Kotsu Iizaka Line to the terminus, about twenty-three minutes. The hot spring town spreads out right from the station, making it easy to explore on foot.

The public baths run hot, so pour water over yourself first to let your body adjust before slipping in.
