Hofu Tenmangu Shrine: Japans First Tenmangu Shrine

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is said to have been founded shortly after the death of Sugawara no Michizane, and is often described as the first Tenjin shrine ever established in Japan. It is a prestigious shrine counted among Japans Three Great Tenjin Shrines alongside Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka. Within the grounds stands Shunpuro, a pavilion and tea house offering sweeping views over the city, admired for its beautiful timber framework. The shrine also preserves cultural treasures nurtured over its long history, including the National Treasure Matsuzaki Tenjin Engi picture scroll. Legend holds that Michizane stopped here on his way to exile in Dazaifu, and that after his death an auspicious sign appeared, leading to the founding of a shrine to enshrine his spirit.

Enjoying the Seasons

Fittingly for a shrine connected to Michizane, plum trees are planted across the grounds, and in early spring their blossoms delight visitors. The Goshinko Matsuri, typically held on the fourth Saturday of November, is a spirited festival in which men known as hadakabo carry the portable shrine through the streets, drawing many spectators. In February the Ushikae Shinji ritual takes place, and events are held throughout the year.
