Deep in the folds of the Southern Alps, along the upper reaches of the Hayakawa, Nishiyama Onsen is a venerable old spring said to have been opened in the second year of the Keiun era (705). It is known for Keiunkan, certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest inn in the world, where abundant free-flowing spring water can be enjoyed in the stillness of the mountains.

Highlights

From inns perched along the ravine you look out over the deep forests of the Southern Alps as they shift through the seasons. The generous free-flowing spring water gushes with such force that it is used without adding water or reheating, and it is famed for feeling gentle on the skin, giving the place every right to be called a hidden retreat. The very history of guarding this spring for more than thirteen hundred years is the area's greatest attraction.

Enjoying the Seasons

The budding of spring, the cool beauty of the summer gorge, the brocade of autumn leaves, and the snowscapes of winter all bring the quiet four seasons that only such a remote setting can offer. Here, far from any town, the noise of the city falls away. Even in summer the high elevation keeps it cool, making it well suited to a stay that doubles as an escape from the heat.

Access and Basic Information

The spring lies at the end of a long mountain road that follows the Hayakawa from the nearest interchange. By public transport it means connecting from Minobu Station on the JR Minobu Line to a Hayakawa community bus and the like, and because the route winds deep into the mountains it takes considerable time, so allow ample margin when planning. Keiunkan sometimes offers a pickup from Minobu Station for guests, so confirming with the inn in advance is reassuring. The all-source free-flowing water is generous in both volume and temperature, to be enjoyed in the deep-mountain stillness of a true hidden spa.

Practical Travel Notes

  • As a lone inn deep in the mountains, it is reassuring to confirm reservations and any pickup service with the inn beforehand.
  • Bus services on public transport are limited, so always check the transfer times before setting out.
  • Mobile reception can be poor in places, so prepare maps and contacts in advance.
  • In winter, watch for icy or snowy roads, and equip your car accordingly.
  • Shops are scarce nearby, so it is wise to buy what you need along the way.

A Quick Tip

The charm lies in a lone inn deep in the mountains, but the journey is long, so give yourself extra time for driving or transfers. Mobile reception can be poor in places, so prepare in advance for a worry-free visit. Soaking in water that has flowed for over thirteen hundred years at what is said to be the oldest inn in the world makes for a truly special break from everyday life.
