Shirakami Sanchi Beech Forest โ€” Trekking Through UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness

Stretching across the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures, the Shirakami Sanchi is a vast, roadless mountain wilderness containing the world's largest remaining virgin beech forest. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 โ€” Japan's first such designation โ€” this primeval forest has never been logged, and its ancient beech trees (buna) create an ecosystem of extraordinary biological richness, sheltering black bears, golden eagles, and the rare black woodpecker within a canopy that has been unbroken for thousands of years.

Highlights

The forest's most iconic image is the deep emerald green of sunlight filtered through layers of beech leaves โ€” a color the Japanese call "buna-midori" (beech green) โ€” dappling the mossy forest floor below. Trails wind through valleys of towering trees, alongside clear mountain streams, and up to viewpoints where the unbroken forest canopy stretches to every horizon.

Fujishiro Falls (Anmon Falls) is one of the region's most dramatic accessible highlights โ€” a powerful cascade plunging through narrow gorges of dark rock. The Juniko (Twelve Lakes) area on the Aomori side features a series of forest lakes, the most famous being Aoike (Blue Pool), whose vivid blue-green water mirrors the beech canopy above.

Access to the core UNESCO zone requires a permit and guided accompaniment. Surrounding buffer zones offer excellent trekking and nature walks accessible independently.

Getting There & Tips

Approach from Nishimeya village (Aomori side) or Fujisato (Akita side). The nearest train stations are Hirosaki (Aomori side) with connecting buses. Rental car is most practical for reaching trailheads. Guided tours are available and recommended for deeper wilderness access.

Best Time to Visit

Mid-May for brilliant spring green buna foliage โ€” one of Japan's great seasonal spectacles. Late October for golden autumn color. Summer (Julyโ€“August) for full trail access. Winter roads are generally closed.
