Mount Ishizuchi

At an elevation of 1,982 meters, Mount Ishizuchi holds the title of the highest peak in western Japan, and in autumn it shows a completely different face. The colors begin near the summit as if catching fire, and the gradation of red, orange, and yellow spreads slowly along the ridgelines down to the foothills, as though the mountain itself were alive. It would be no exaggeration to call this "a textbook of Japanese autumn"—a landscape of overwhelming scale awaits you here.

When you ride the ropeway up to around 1,300 meters, the first thing to greet you is the old shrine building of Joju-sha. The contrast between the time-worn wooden architecture and the blazing colors of the trees is a one-of-a-kind sight where the history of mountain worship overlaps with the natural beauty of autumn. And on a clear early morning, the moment when the deep mist suddenly lifts and the full panorama of foliage appears—those who have experienced that breathtaking instant even once say they return to this mountain every year.

For photography lovers, I strongly recommend taking the ropeway on one of the earliest morning departures. The soft morning light shines through the leaves of the trees, and with few tourists about, the serene figure of Ishizuchi that can only be seen at this hour is something you will absolutely never encounter in the afternoon. If you are lucky, you may capture a miraculous shot of a sea of clouds overlapping with the foliage.

Also, the area around the torii gate of Ishizuchi Shrine, a short walk from Joju-sha, is a hidden photo spot where local photographers gather. The composition framing the foliage-covered ridge beyond the shrine building, as if in a picture frame, is a hidden gem of a view rarely found in guidebooks.

Peak season: early October to mid-November (according to the ropeway's published guide: the summit area peaks early to mid-October, the Joju-sha area mid-October to around the 20th, and the Nishikawasuji valley late October to mid-November — a spread of more than a month depending on elevation)

Recommended time: Early morning right after opening (the 8 a.m. hour). The morning after a day prone to mist is an especially good target.

Access

• Train + bus: From JR Yosan Line "Iyo-Saijo Station," take the Setouchi Bus bound for "Ishizuchi Ropeway-mae" for about 54 minutes (adult ¥1,020 / child ¥510, as revised October 2024). It is just a few minutes' walk from the bus stop to the ropeway station, making access easy. Even from Matsuyama Station, you can arrive in about 1 hour 30 minutes by transferring between a limited express and a local bus.
• Car: About 1 hour 30 minutes from central Matsuyama via National Routes 11 and 194. There is a paid parking lot near the ropeway station, which is convenient to use.
• Crowd info: On weekends and holidays during peak foliage season, it is not unusual for long lines to form at the ropeway, with waits of over an hour in some cases. It is wise to arrive on-site in the 7 a.m. hour, or to boldly plan your trip for a weekday.

Travel tip: The mountaintop is often more than 10°C colder than the lowlands, and even on sunny days the wind can make it feel even colder. Be sure to bring easy-to-layer warm clothing such as a fleece or a light down jacket. Also, the trail beyond Joju-sha has many rocky areas and wet tree roots, and there are slippery spots underfoot. It is safer to wear trekking shoes with good grip rather than sneakers. As shops near the summit can sell out of drinks and snacks during busy times, it is reassuring to prepare these in advance.

Omogo Gorge

"Omogo Gorge"—many of you may be hearing this name for the first time. Carved quietly into the southern foot of Mount Ishizuchi, this gorge boasts some of the finest gorge scenery not only in Ehime but in all of Shikoku, a secret place known only to those in the know. The landscape woven by the emerald-green, crystal-clear stream and the white granite rock faces polished by water over countless years is so beautiful that, on a clear day, it can take your breath away. When autumn foliage is added to this, the reds and yellows reflected on the water's surface, the gleaming white rocks, and the clear blue sky form layer upon layer, opening up before your eyes a world like a painting someone created with all their heart and soul.

A maintained walking path runs along the gorge, and one of its great charms is being able to stroll leisurely through the foliage while listening to the murmur of the stream. Among the spots, the one you should especially pause at is "Goshiki-gawara" (Five-Color Riverbank). True to its name, the blue of the river, the white of the rocks, the red and yellow of the foliage, and the deep blue of the sky all leap into view at once—a fantastical scene where multiple colors blend together. It is a special place that local photographers and painters have cherished for years. It is also a luxury unique to this hidden spot that you can peer through the viewfinder at your own pace without worrying about crowds.

Furthermore, small campsites and rest areas are dotted along the gorge, making it perfect for a leisurely day trip where you spend half a day enjoying a lunch made with local ingredients. Time wrapped in nothing but clear air and the sound of water, far removed from the hustle of the city, is sure to become a highlight of your trip.

Peak season: No official peak-foliage dates have been published for Omogo Gorge by either Kumakogen Town or Ehime Prefecture. It is thought to peak slightly later than Mount Ishizuchi given its lower elevation, making it a natural fit for a two-day itinerary — but confirm the current conditions with the Omogo Alpine Museum (0892-58-2130) before you go.

Recommended time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Only during these hours does the sunlight reach the bottom of the gorge, making the emerald-green color of the water shine most vividly. Since the gorge tends to be in shadow in the early morning and evening, aim for around midday if you prioritize lighting conditions.

Access

• Car: About 1 hour 30 minutes from central Matsuyama via National Route 33 and Prefectural Route 12. There is a free parking lot at the "Omogo Gorge Entrance," which is convenient to use. However, the number of parking spaces is limited, so it is better to arrive early in the morning.
• Public transport: Unfortunately there is no direct bus service to the gorge, and access by public transport alone is difficult. The realistic option is to rent a car from one of the major rental companies in central Matsuyama; in that case, staying overnight in Matsuyama the night before makes for a smooth trip.
• Crowd info: Since it is somewhat less famous than Mount Ishizuchi, the good news is that you can spend your time relatively relaxed even on weekends during foliage season. However, since the free parking lot has limited capacity, aim to arrive early in the morning.

Travel tip: Part of the walking path along the gorge consists of stone paving wet with spray, which can be surprisingly slippery underfoot. Visiting in sandals or thin-soled leather shoes is dangerous, so be sure to wear sneakers or trekking shoes with good grip. Also, since the gorge has many trees and gets little direct sunlight, it often feels chillier than the actual temperature even on sunny days. Tucking a light outer layer into your bag will greatly improve your comfort. The full walking route takes about 1 to 2 hours, so don't forget water and a light snack.

Uchiko Town

About an hour's drive south of Matsuyama, Uchiko Town spreads out as if cradled by gentle mountains. This small town, which flourished from the Edo through the Meiji periods on the production of mokuro (wood wax), still has the "Yokaichi-Gokoku Townscape," where merchant houses and white-walled storehouses from those days stand lined up as if still breathing. As you walk the cobblestone alleys, you feel the strange sensation that the flow of time has slowed just a little—that is the kind of place it is.

When this charming townscape becomes wrapped in the colors of late autumn, the ginkgo trees along the streets turn a vivid golden yellow, persimmons dried under the eaves of old houses glow orange, and with every gust of wind, leaves flutter and dance across the cobblestones. There are few places where the phrase "the original landscape of Japanese autumn" comes to one's lips so naturally. It is not a flashy spectacle but a quiet, warm beauty—that is the essence of Uchiko's autumn foliage.

Since it is not as widely known as a "foliage spot" as Mount Ishizuchi or Omogo Gorge, Uchiko's greatest charm is that you can enjoy strolling at your own pace without being chased by crowds, even on weekends. You may find a persimmon tree carefully tended in a local resident's garden turning color, or autumn leaves in a small inner garden viewed from the veranda of a cafe converted from an old house—the more you walk, the more you encounter "the true face of Ehime's autumn."

After your stroll, be sure to extend your trip to the roadside station "Uchiko Fresh Park Karari." Here you'll find seasonal persimmons, mandarin oranges, and chestnuts freshly picked that morning by local farmers, as well as plenty of sweets and side dishes made from them. It is the perfect spot to cap off your trip, where you can enjoy Ehime's autumn flavors all in one place. If you spot the handmade chestnut sticky rice or persimmon jam made by local grandmothers, don't hesitate to pick them up.

Peak season: No official peak-foliage dates have been published for Uchiko Town's Yokaichi-Gokoku townscape (since it peaks later than the mountain areas, it is ideal to fit it into the final day of a three-day, two-night itinerary together with Mount Ishizuchi and Omogo Gorge. The quiet, calm atmosphere unique to late autumn is also irresistible)

Recommended time: 3 p.m. until just before sunset. The "evening magic hour," when the setting sun casts orange light on the white walls and the cobblestones and foliage are dyed golden, is the moment this town shows its most beautiful face of the day. In particular, the street in front of the Hon-Haga Family Residence in the middle of the Yokaichi-Gokoku townscape is so breathtakingly beautiful with its combination of evening light, white walls, and foliage that it has become a sunset spot known to locals in the know.

Access

• Train: Get off at JR Yosan Line "Uchiko Station," then walk about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the Yokaichi-Gokoku townscape. From Matsuyama Station it is about 30 minutes by limited express, or about 50 minutes by local train, so access is good. If you don't have much luggage, you can fully enjoy this as a train trip.
• Car: From central Matsuyama, take the Matsuyama Expressway, exit at Uchiko-Ikazaki IC, and it is about 5 minutes from there. There are several free and paid parking lots around the townscape, which you can use by following the signs.
• Crowd info: Even during foliage season, the number of visitors is mild compared to other famous spots. However, tour buses sometimes arrive on weekend mornings, and you may run into large groups. An afternoon visit lets you enjoy a more relaxed stroll.

Travel tip: The cobblestone alleys are narrow, and there are spots that are hard to walk in heeled shoes or hard-soled shoes. Come in comfortable flat shoes. Also, many of the restaurants and old-house cafes within the townscape close early in the evening (around 4 to 5 p.m.), so it is recommended to finish lunch before noon. Conversely, there are also sake-brewery-run tasting rooms open until dusk, so sampling a sip of local sake to round off your town walk will make your travel memories all the deeper.

Peak Foliage Times and How to Enjoy

Ehime's autumn foliage begins at high-altitude Mount Ishizuchi, moving on to Omogo Gorge, and then to the village town of Uchiko—as if autumn itself slowly descends from the mountains to the villages, with the peak season shifting in order. Being able to experience this "vertical traverse of autumn" in a single trip is the greatest charm of an autumn foliage trip in Ehime.

An itinerary covering these three spots over three days and two nights is the golden plan for experiencing Ehime's autumn to the fullest. Stay in central Matsuyama, enjoy the dynamic mountain foliage at Mount Ishizuchi on day one, take your time on day two enjoying quiet streamside leaf-viewing and lunch at Omogo Gorge, and stroll through Uchiko Town on the final day before heading home—this flow lets you encounter three completely different faces of autumn: the mountains, the gorge, and the historic town.

For those who want to avoid the crowds as much as possible, weekdays from late October to early November are an especially good target. During this period, the peak seasons of Mount Ishizuchi and Omogo Gorge overlap just right, and it is also the timing when the peak of tourists begins to settle down. Breathing in lungfuls of the mountain air filled with blazing reds and oranges, please savor the depth of Ehime's autumn with your whole body. It is sure to become a trip that makes you want to come back again next year.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

[MOST IMPORTANT] Uchikoza Theatre Is Closed Until Around April 2028

Uchikoza, the kabuki theatre that features in virtually every article about Uchiko Town, has been closed since 2 September 2024 for approximately four years of preservation and seismic reinforcement works. The Uchiko Town official page "About the Long-Term Closure of Uchikoza" (updated 24 June 2024) uses only the expression "approximately four years" — no specific reopening date is given (the reference to "until around April 2028" on a separate page refers to the period of road traffic restrictions associated with the construction work). In any case, during this period it is not possible to tour the theatre itself or attend performances there. All previous guides stating "admission ¥600 for a self-guided tour" are now invalid — please be aware.

In its place, the backstage area of Uchikoza is open for a special public viewing.

A combined ticket covering the Uchikoza Backstage, the Historical Folk Museum, and the Mokuro (wood wax) Museum Kaminohaga Residence is also available, but the price of this combined ticket could not be confirmed from the official page.

Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway Fares (Revised 20 April 2023)

Please note the payment options. Credit cards and some e-money are accepted only at the base station (Fumoto Shimotani Station). The summit station (Joju Station) and the sightseeing lift accept cash only. The disability certificate app "Mirairo ID" is accepted.

The sightseeing lift (fares revised 1 October 2019) costs ¥600 return / ¥350 one-way, operates 9:00–16:30, and runs from late April to late November (subject to closure for weather or maintenance). Groups of 30+ receive a 10% discount and groups of 100+ receive a 20% discount, but discounts cannot be combined for the lift, and payment is cash only (except for travel agency coupons).

Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway Operating Hours (Foliage Season)

The ropeway runs every 20 minutes at :00, :20, and :40, increasing to every 10 minutes when busy (0897-59-0331). From 4 November (the second half of the foliage season) the first departure moves back to 8:40, so if you want to catch the early-morning light, visiting in October is the better choice.

Also note that all services are officially suspended for regular maintenance from 6 April 2026 (Mon) to 24 April 2026 (Fri) (a longer closure than the 7–18 April 2025 period). Anyone planning a spring visit to Ishizuchi should take note.

Ishizuchi Skyline (Tsuchigoya Route) Gate Opening and Closing Times

For those driving around to the Omogo-Tsuchigoya area, the Ishizuchi Skyline operates night-time closures year-round. There is no toll.

During the foliage season, the gate closes at 18:00. The distance from the Omogo gate to Tsuchigoya is approximately 17.1 km, taking about 30 minutes to drive through. If you cannot exit through the gate by closing time, you are locked in until the following morning. Allow yourself to leave Tsuchigoya no later than 17:00 (Kumakogen Civil Engineering Office: 0892-21-1210). The road also enters its winter closure from 1 December, another point to keep in mind when planning a late-autumn trip.

Practical Information for Omogo-kei Gorge

Omogo Alpine Museum

The unusual closure pattern — closing the day after a public holiday — means visitors travelling on the middle or final day of a long weekend should check the calendar carefully.

Yokaichi-Gokoku Historic District

This district was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in 1982 (Showa 57). Along approximately 600 m of the historic highway stand 93 specified traditional buildings and 3 nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. Car parks include the town-operated car park below Kocho-ji temple (standard vehicles ¥300 per visit / coaches ¥1,040 per visit) and others. Enquiries: Yokaichi-Gokoku Townscape Preservation Centre (0893-44-5212).

In autumn, an event called the "Yoichimachi Tsukimi-kai" (Moon-Viewing Gathering) is held around the time of the harvest moon, when residents light handmade paper lanterns along the eaves of the traditional townhouses (the event was held in 2025; the 2026 date had not been announced at the time of research).
