Tsurugi Shrine: An Ancient Power Spot Linked to Oda Nobunaga

๐Ÿฆ• Fukui|June 24, 2026

Tsurugi Shrine

Located in Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture, Tsurugi Shrine is the second shrine of Echizen, with 1,800 years of history (the first shrine is Kehi Jingu in Tsuruga). It is said to have begun by enshrining the great deity Susanoo as the Tsurugi great deity, and since the Nara period it has drawn deep faith from the court and the people as a place of prayer. The ancestors of the warlord Oda Nobunaga are said to have been priests here, and Nobunaga himself protected it generously as his guardian shrine. A venerable old shrine, it is a richly atmospheric, lesser-known power spot popular with history lovers.

Highlights

- The second shrine of Echizen, enshrining the great deity Susanoo with 1,800 years of history - A deep history linked to the ancestors of Oda Nobunaga - A national-treasure bell said to be the third oldest in Japan - The omokaru stone you lift while making a wish (if it feels light, the wish may come true)

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the cherry blossoms on the grounds color the calm old-shrine atmosphere, and in summer it is wrapped in deep green and cool. In autumn red leaves add charm to the hall, and the Myojin-bayashi drum dedicated in autumn is a highlight. In winter the quiet snow-wrapped precinct creates a crisp air. Throughout the year you can feel the weight of history and faith.

A Quick Tip

It is fun to start by telling your fortune with the omokaru stone. Paying attention to the national-treasure bell and the history tied to Oda Nobunaga makes the visit much richer. Pairing it with a drive along the Echizen coast also makes for a pleasant route.
