Okamoto and Otaki Shrines

Located in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Okamoto and Otaki Shrines form the only shrine in Japan that enshrines Kawakami-Gozen, the goddess of paper. About 1,500 years ago, in the time of Emperor Keitai, a beautiful princess is said to have appeared here and taught the villagers the craft of making paper with the pure water, and the shrine began by enshrining her. Resting in the home of Echizen washi paper, it is a lesser-known power spot admired by people who make things.

Highlights

- A sacred shrine, the only one in Japan enshrining Kawakami-Gozen, the goddess of paper - A village shrine hall with a complex, beautiful roof like waves meeting, a national important cultural property - Refined carvings gathering the finest late-Edo shrine architecture - A historic layout of an inner sanctuary on the summit and the village shrine at the foot

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the fresh greenery and in autumn the red leaves set off the hall beautiful roof, popular with photography lovers. At the Echizen washi village you can enjoy papermaking experiences year-round, and many visit it together with the shrine.
